JOB SUMMARY
The Shelter Veterinarian shall be responsible for the Veterinary functions at Queen Anne’s County Animal Services.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Perform spays, neuters, dental, and other soft tissue surgical procedures.
Perform Subjective Objective Assessment Plan exams on new animals.
Perform weekly rounds on animals in care to assess for infectious diseases and/or injuries.
Consult with behavior staff on mental health concerns and possible pharmaceutical intervention needs.
Assist the Medical Care Technician for reorder of medications and surgical supplies.
Perform examinations and create treatment plans for foster animals.
Ability to perform in-house diagnostics such as bloodwork, urinalysis, and cytology.
Host Low-Cost Vaccination Clinic in collaboration with the Chief of Animal Services
Periodically review Standard Operating Procedures for intake, illness, and sanitation protocols with the Chief of Animal Services
Periodically review and adjust shelter medical protocols based on industry standards with the Chief of Animal Services.
Willingness to provide guidance to the medical team when off location.
Provide cordial, responsive, and accurate customer service.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Understanding of and a willingness to apply management practices relating to shelter medicine.
Working knowledge of breeds, diseases, medical conditions, and animal handling and behavior.
Ability to handle animals safely and with patience and gentleness.
Ability to represent QACAS in a professional manner in all situations with the public, volunteers, and staff.
Ability to create and sustain positive working relationships within QACAS, with volunteers, fosters, the public, and be a team player.
Must be patient, courteous and work well under stressful conditions.
Knowledge and ability to accurately work with detailed information in paper and computerized format.
Must be detail oriented and have strong time management skills.
Ability to read, write and communicate effectively.
Ability to learn and quickly adapt to changes in programs and procedures.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Possession of a Class C Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator’s License (or the equivalent from another issuing state) or the ability to obtain such a license within thirty (30) days of employment to position.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
DVM Degree from an accredited university required; Maryland Veterinary License required or ability to obtain a Maryland Veterinary License within 30 days.
Maryland Controlled Substance License required or ability to obtain a Maryland Controlled Substance License within 30 days.
Federal DEA License required or ability to obtain a DEA License within 30 days.
Become Fear Free Certified within 6 months of employment.
Experience in Petpoint preferred.
Experience in Shelter Medicine preferred.
Experience in high volume Spay/neuter preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must be able to lift to 50 lbs.; This position requires you to stand for long periods of time.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Exposure to loud working environment (barking dogs in dog kennels); Exposed to zoonosis diseases (Ringworm, Rabies, Intestinal parasites); Exposure to fractious and aggressive animals.

This position is one within the Queen Anne’s County Civil Service System. An employee must serve a period of twelve months probation during which he or she may be terminated without notice, cause, hearing or right of appeal.
