Salary Range
$8,822.52 - $10,723.81 monthly. This amount reflects salary for 1.0 FTE. Current vacancy is for a part-time position with pro-rated salary ($6,616.89 - $8,042.86 monthly) and benefits, based on 0.75 FTE.
Position Summary
To provide advanced, complex, routine, and emergency medical and surgical care for a wide variety of animal species in a municipal animal shelter; maintain a veterinary medical facility in the absence of the permitting Veterinarian; and perform related duties.
Supervision Exercised & Received
Receives limited direction and supervision from the permitting Veterinarian and Animal Care Administrator, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Exercises direct and indirect supervision over assigned veterinary staff.
Essential Functions Functions may include, but are not limited to, the following: Direct and perform the more complex laboratory screening and diagnosis, as well as basic and emergency medical treatment of all species of domestic animals received at the shelter. Perform high volume spay/neuter surgery weekly on animals prior to adoption. Perform additional soft tissue surgery as needed to maintain flow through shelter or as requested by management. Oversee the health of impounded animals. Supervise staff on the visual monitoring of animals for signs of illness or unusual behavior. Provide direct written, oral, or telephone health care instructions to Registered Veterinary Technicians. Examine animals for signs of illness prior to adoption and/or surgery. Oversee the appropriate and safe use of pharmaceuticals. Maintain computerized medical records to track the care, condition, and disposition of animals. Supervise the ordering and maintenance of medical supplies and equipment. Participate in investigations regarding the humane treatment of animals. Perform necropsy exams with documentation and recommendations. Evaluate, recommend, and perform humane euthanasia of suffering or medically unhealthy animals. Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers and the public. Meet or exceed continuing education requirements to maintain licensing. Perform other duties related to this position. Minimum Qualifications Any combination of education and/or experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: Two years of practical experience in the field of veterinary medicine. Experience in high volume spay/neuter techniques is
required . A degree in Veterinary Medicine from an accredited college or university is
required . License or Certificate : Possession of a valid license to practice veterinary medicine in the State of California is required at time of hire and must be maintained during employment. Possession of, or ability to obtain, a Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) controlled substance registration. Possession of a valid California driver's license. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of:
principles and practices of current veterinary medicine; infectious animal diseases; current veterinary practices and techniques; County, state, and federal animal health laws and regulations; customer service objectives; computer equipment and software use; English usage. Ability to:
provide surgical and medical services for various animals; analyze critical medical situations; provide high quality medical care; prepare written reports; communicate clearly; establish effective working relationships; work with various cultural and ethnic groups. Physical Demands and Working Conditions On a continuous basis, sit and stand for varying periods of time; perform simple grasping and fine manipulation; push, pull, lift, or carry weight of 50 pounds or less. Primary work is performed indoors with exposure to hazardous conditions. Workweek will include weekends, holidays, and special events as required.
