Under limited supervision, the University Ombudsperson leads the activities of the Office of the Ombudsperson which serves as an impartial, confidential, and independent resource for faculty and staff. This role is pivotal in promoting a fair, inclusive, and harmonious working and learning environment by addressing concerns, resolving conflicts, and fostering effective communication across the institution. The Ombudsperson position will play a critical role in promoting a culture of trust, respect, and collaboration within the institution. This culture is grounded in LMU's Catholic, Jesuit, and Marymount identity, which centers values such as care for the whole person, the promotion of justice, and the dignity of all persons. The position will interact on a regular basis with Loyola Marymount University (LMU) management and leadership, faculty, and staff. This position will advise and counsel faculty and staff. The University Ombudsperson works closely with human resources, legal, and DEI to promote a positive and productive working and learning environment that has a strong tradition in restorative justice, generative conflict, and reconciliation.
Responsibilities:
Provides impartial, informal, independent and confidential conflict resolution services to one or more constituencies, including faculty and staff.
Responsible for program administration and/or management and independently establishes priorities, goals and objectives, and develops outreach activities and training on conflict resolution.
Provides annual reports, including recommendations for institutional policy and/or procedural changes and educational interventions for the promotion of a positive campus climate.
Utilizes conflict resolution and mediation techniques and skills to work with individuals and/or groups to present a range of options to resolve conflict, including complex and/or difficult cases.
Makes recommendations for institutional policy and/or procedural changes.
Serves as an institutional resource to other offices on campus for resolving complaints.
Designs and conducts training sessions and outreach programs.
Adheres to and promotes Ombuds' standards of practice and code of ethics.
May sit on relevant high-level campus committees as a non-voting member.
Partners with the Human Resources Employee Relations team to identify systemic issues, develop strategies to address patterns of concern, and implement initiatives to improve organizational culture.
Establishes and maintains effective working relationships at all levels of administration (Deans, Directors, Vice Presidents, Vice Provosts, EVP and Provost, EVP and COO, Office of the President and SVP and General Counsel).

Requisite Qualifications:
A master's degree in Conflict Management/Resolution, Organizational Behavior, Social Work, Human Resources Management, Psychology Counseling, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum 5 or more years of related experience.
Expert knowledge of the nature of conflict and conflict resolution and mediation techniques and principles.
Expert knowledge of the appropriate role of the Ombudsperson, the code of ethics and standards of practice.
Thorough understanding of LMU, the mission, goals, objectives, resources, infrastructure, policies, procedures, and practices. Familiarity with restorative justice or similar practices welcome.
Thorough understanding of all applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures, research methods, techniques, and/or sources of information.
Expert conflict resolution and mediation skills and expert skills in developing effective options for conflict resolution.
Expert interpersonal communication skills to work effectively with a broad range of diverse populations within a complex and multi-layered organization, including effective listening, discernment, empathy, and sensitivity skills.
Skills in research/assessment, critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills.
Skills in analyzing statistical data to provide institutional feedback regarding trends, practices, policies, procedures, etc.
Expert training skills.
Skills to understand the risk and liability issues of an academic and research institution, including the principles of university shared governance and academic freedom.
Expert skills to identify issues and provide effective options, recognizing policy, legal and practical implications.
Demonstrated computer competency.

Salary range:
$112,200.00 - $151,500.00 Salary commensurate with education and experience.
