Founded in 1977 to help Latino's learn basic skills, pass the civil service exam and obtain higher paying post office jobs, Instituto has grown to a flourishing educational center serving over 14,000 Chicago families per year.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The School Nurse oversees the school health program for the Instituto Health and Sciences Career Academy and Instituto Justice and Leadership Academy campuses, coordinating the delivery of health services to students and acting as a health resource for staff to promote overall wellness in the school community. The nurse's duties are to be carried out in accordance with professional school nurse practice standards, State Board of Education policies, and the State of Illinois Nurse Practice Act.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Conduct professional development training and workshops for teachers, administrators, and other school personnel. Provide and/or delegate to licensed personnel direct professional nursing services, first aid, illness, and emergency care to students. Identify health problems, makes referrals for diagnosis and treatment, develop educational modifications, provide follow-up and evaluation, and maintain appropriate documentation. Provide services to students with disabilities as delineated in the IEP/504. Follow up on homebound students needing related health care services pursuant to the specific needs of the student. Provide intervention in times of school crisis, i.e. death, suicide, traumatic events. Initiate, encourage, and participate in health education programs for children. Assist special education children to accept or adjust to physical, emotional or health limitations. Provide health counseling to parents of special education students and provide individual and group health counseling to special education students. Develop the medication protocol to safely store, administer, document, and monitor the effectiveness of medication given at school. Coordinate activities of local schools concerned with communicable disease regulations. Assist with the State and Federal mandated screenings and provide follow-up for deficits in vision, hearing, growth and development, and other physical impairments. Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to determine if health adversely affects a student's educational process and be responsible for the development of all IEP goals, benchmarks, and accommodations for students requiring health related services. Consult with the Leadership Teams to identify priorities for overall school health-related goals, develop action plans, and monitor progress on goals. Provide regular updates to the Director of Student Services regarding program progress. Maintain professional competence by attending staff development programs, curriculum development meetings and other professional activities. Participate in various student and parent activities which occur in school including PTA, student clubs and after-school activities. Perform any other related duties as assigned by the Principal or other appropriate administrator. QUALIFICATIONS

Licensed RN in Illinois Type 73 certification as defined by the Illinois State Teachers Certification Board Certification in audiometric and vision screening Certified instructor in American Heart Association CPR and AED

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The nature of the work requires an ability to operate standard business office equipment. The position requires the ability to collect and compile work documents, as well as exchange information. Approximately half of the time on the job will be spent standing. Lifting of objects weighing less than 30 pounds may be required. Due to the nature of the subject matter, the nurse may be exposed to various chemicals.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Majority of work performed in a general school environment. Position requires availability for extended hours plus non-traditional hours may be required to perform job duties. Position also requires participation and attendance at organization sponsored events and meetings.
