Role Description Reporting to the CEO, and a member of the Senior Executive Team (SET) the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) provides leadership, creates overall strategy, and manages the implementation of initiatives designed to build the Society’s long-term financial stability. The CFO is responsible for directing all of the Society’s financial functions, policies and programs in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles. In addition to being well versed in all aspects of financial and risk management, the person in this role will be someone who feels passionately about our mission and who will step into an executive leadership role in the organization, helping to direct organizational strategy and taking responsibility for instilling an inclusive, professional, and productive culture. Core Responsibilities Fiscal Direction and Management Manage cash flow and banking, including negotiating loans and managing all loan covenants. Administer insurance and evaluate risk on an annual basis. Evaluate, develop and implement effective, efficient and up-to-date financial and administrative systems and processes to best serve the organization’s needs, including for AP, AR, payroll, cash management, financial reporting and others. Manage and improve the processes to generate and measure performance improvements through metrics targets and reporting. Evaluate and enhance an effective annual budget process working closely with SET. Work with the Board of Directors, CEO, and senior staff to develop and achieve financial goals. Provide fiscal forecasting and business development strategic analysis and identify required shifts in the Society’s operating models to ensure long term financial health. Maintain relationships with outside auditors, insurance brokers, bankers and other vendors as needed. Oversee reserve funds management and compliance with the Society’s investment policies. Partner with Human Resources to manage the implementation of the Society’s benefits program including 401(k) retirement plan. Coordinate external audits and accumulate data necessary to ensure the proper filing of federal tax and state sales tax returns. Analyze, suggest, and implement ways for the organization to reduce expenses and increase revenue. Ensure legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions. Leadership and Board Relations Work closely with the CEO, Board Chair, Committee Chairs and Committees (including but not limited to Finance, Investment, and Audit) to guide the financial and administrative development of the organization to help ensure healthy and responsible fiscal activities within the context of the organization’s goals. Prepare materials for and lead Finance Committee meetings. Work closely with the Society’s leadership to assist them in being as effective as possible in program financial management, program budgeting and related activities. As a member of the Senior Executive Team, participate in organization-wide strategic planning and implementation. Participate in executive team projects and initiatives including strategic planning, capital improvements, leadership development, staff and volunteer recognition and engagement. Participate and volunteer at events, including adopt-a-thons, vaccine clinics, volunteer appreciation, donor and fundraising events. Cultivate and nurture an in-depth working relationship with all members of the executive team. Serve as an enthusiastic, effective advocate for the Society’s mission and programs internally and throughout the community. Finance Team Staff Development In partnership with the Controller, provide oversight for the hiring, orientation, and training of finance department staff. In partnership with the Controller, provide leadership and direction to the department staff, set long- and short-term goals, develop action plans, and provide performance reviews. Foster a sense of belonging, commitment, cohesion and passion in the department’s leadership and staff. Keep the team members informed and engaged on relevant news, policies and events across the Society. Take responsibility for promoting staff morale and engaging employees throughout the organization. Requirements: Bachelor’s degree in Finance or Accounting, Masters preferred Ten (10) years in a financial position with at least five (5) years in a departmental leadership position Certified Public Accountant ideal or a thorough knowledge of nonprofit accounting. Thorough knowledge of non-profit finance, including restricted funds (endowments) and the application of general accounting theory. Ability to build effective, trusting relationships, seeing everyone as a customer to be served. Self-aware and emotionally intelligent – expert at reflective listening and interpersonal sensitivity. Successful experience in coordinating multiple projects; organized and efficiency focused. Outstanding written and oral communication skills including small and large group presentations. Ability to analyze and recommend solutions to complex financial issues with a minimum of supervision. Demonstrated success in managing a diverse team of professionals and successful at facilitating collaboration and achieving goals. Ability to recognize risks and pursue actions to manage risk. Ability to develop procedures, protocols and collateral materials. Strong technological aptitude, particularly Microsoft Office and NetSuite expertise preferred. Commitment to the mission, values, goals, and success of the San Francisco SPCA. Salary & Benefits The starting salary for this position depends on the depth and breadth of experience. The expected range is $240,000 – $270,000.
