Job Summary

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • The Shipfitter position involves performing layout fabrication, assembly, installation, operation, modification, and testing of experimental components, materials, apparatus, and equipment at an advanced level. A shipfitter requires a comprehensive understanding of shipboard and industrial work practices, particularly in military environments.

Responsibilities Position, align, fit, and weld parts to form complete units or subunits, following blueprints and layout specifications, and using jigs, welding torches, and hand tools. Verify conformance of workpieces to specifications, using squares, rulers, and measuring tapes. Tack-weld fitted parts together. Lay out and examine metal stock or workpieces to be processed to ensure that specifications are met. Align and fit parts according to specifications, using jacks, turnbuckles, wedges, drift pins, pry bars, and hammers. Locate and mark workpiece bending and cutting lines, allowing for stock thickness, machine and welding shrinkage, and other component specifications. Position or tighten braces, jacks, clamps, ropes, or bolt straps, or bolt parts in position for welding or riveting. Requirements

Work may be performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You may be required to participate in medical surveillance programs. This position may require exposure to high noise levels. This position may be subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required. Qualifications

High School Diploma or the equivalent (for example, GED) Minimum two years of on-the-job experience, demonstrated knowledge of blueprint reading, ship terminology and different metals required Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in the construction or repair of buildings. Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customers and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction. Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance. Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications. Clean background with the ability to receive clearance to work in shipyards. Ability to lift and carry 50+ pounds in a physical environment. Ability to make repetitive movements. Must be very safety conscious and dedicated to doing a good job. Excellent hand-eye coordination Good level of physical fitness Good written and verbal communication skills. Physically able to perform the essential functions of the job without accommodation. Must wear personal protective equipment (PPE - Safety Shoes, Safety Glasses W/Tinted Lenses, Hardhat, Respirator, Hearing Protection). Ability to lift and/or carry equipment/objects greater than 50lbs. Familiar with typical environment found in the shipyard and ship repair industry.
