UW MEDICAL CENTER - MONTLAKE - REHAB MEDICINE - SPEECH PATHOLOGY has an outstanding opportunity for a SPEECH LANGUAGE PATHOLOGIST 2 – FEES Program Clinical Specialist. POSITION HIGHLIGHTS This position is program lead for speech language pathology services for patients with swallowing disorders. Under general direction, coordinate and provide leadership within critical care, acute care, and inpatient rehabilitation settings within the practice of speech language pathology, responsible for managing, assessing, and training clinicians in the use of Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) and FEES equipment across the continuum of care in accordance to patient needs.
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Program Lead (40%) Oversees a specialized program within the Speech-Language Pathology Department: - Develop and maintain FEES program training competency. - Make recommendations for equipment and product ordering associated with FEES and manage appropriate labeling, storage, and organization of equipment and products. - Work with FEES equipment vendors and technical support staff to troubleshoot and determine need for repair. - Train Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) in appropriate use and recommendation of FEES procedure. - Train SLPs on FEES program equipment use, maintenance, and troubleshooting. - Plan for, coordinate, and supervise SLP’s practice endoscopy and patient endoscopy. - Guide SLPs through completion of FEES competency and demonstrate ability to adapt to individual learning d styles. - Train SLPs on appropriate FEES documentation and billing standards, including clinical note support, documentation review, and documentation co-signature as indicated by SLP progress within program competency. - Provide FEES program education to care providers (e.g., therapists, RNs, APPs, MDs, etc.) in acute units, ICUs, NICU, and Inpatient Rehab. - Develop and maintain FEES program development and such as inter- & intra-departmental education material, up-to-date literature reviews, and written guidelines for FEES equipment use, maintenance, and troubleshooting. - In collaboration with SLP supervisor or manager, identify barriers to SLP progression through FEES competency and formulate plan for addressing barriers. - In collaboration with supervisor or manager, develop and maintain FEES policies & procedures and infection control standards.
Direct Patient Care (60%) - Independently, plans, directs and administers Speech Language Pathology evaluation and intervention to patients throughout the medical center. - Assesses and treats a patient caseload ranging from routine to complex patient problems utilizing training in the evaluation and treatment process. - Under general direction, coordinates and provides leadership within acute care practice of speech language pathology, responsible for managing, assessing and directing clinical activities within acute care in accordance to patient needs. - Assists patients to reach their maximum performance and function, appropriate to their inpatient stay and medical situation. - Collaborates with other disciplines as appropriate to coordinate continuity of patient care from admission to discharge. - Acts as a resource within the therapy department. - In collaboration with supervisor or manager, coordinates development of selected department activities/projects to promote delivery of quality speech therapy care. - Assists and/or leads other staff in program development and quality improvement tasks. - Assists in annual observations and assists in competency assessment of assigned clinical staff. - Assists and/or leads to develop clinical programs for optimum patient care and service. - Participates in operational aspects, performance improvement, and Quality Improvement activities within the department. - Provides input in formulating budget, assists in evaluation of departmental performance, and takes action to remain in budget guidelines. - Ensures that patient charges and documentation are accurate and entered on a timely basis. - Supervises students, volunteers, and office assistants. - Participates in infection control, equipment training, compliance, safety and educational programs, both at the departmental and organization level.

Demonstrates advanced working knowledge of the disease process, precautions, typical medical treatment and diagnostic procedures, functional abilities, complications and implications of long term deficits related to primary diagnoses treated in service area. Provides skilled, timely and effective patient care. Demonstrates competency in administering evaluations and delivering treatment to typical patient population and to patients with more complex or unique circumstances. Assists therapists with complex patient management issues and provides staff with constructive feedback and guidance in evaluation and treatment of patients. 3. Demonstrates advanced clinical skill or certification with a particular patient population or type of therapy intervention. Takes initiative to share expertise with colleagues. 4. Articulates protocols and/or guidelines of care relating to specific diagnosis on assigned service. Assists in updating care standards and/or developing new guidelines, and mentors others in these activities. 5. Participates in team rounds and other educational information to patient and support systems prior to termination of therapy intervention. 6. Provide home programs and other educational information to patient and support systems prior to termination of therapy intervention. 7. Demonstrates knowledge of other team members’ roles. Collaborates effectively with patient and team to enhance functional outcomes. 8. Organizes daily work and caseloads for other clinicians, appropriately prioritizes caseload and sets daily priorities independently. Mentors staff therapists in these functions. 9. Follows billing and reimbursement procedures. Strives to meets productivity requirements. 10. Practices UW Service Culture Guidelines. Contributes to the efficient operation of the therapy department and/or workgroup. Helps create a positive work environment by demonstrating teamwork, flexibility, and service oriented communication with patients and co-workers. 11. Takes initiative to formulate ideas for and complete useful QI projects. 12. Coordinates workgroup quality improvement in conjunction with supervisor, manager or other clinical specialists. 13. Identifies clinical or system concerns with patient care standards and works to get these corrected to increase efficiency. 14. Supports departmental and hospital based change in a positive manner. Helps roll out new programs to clinical staff and supports and facilitates collaborative learning among all disciplines and workgroups. 15. Assists in presenting information at discipline meetings and participates in workgroup meetings. Offers creative, positive ideas and solutions. 16. Participates in the hiring process of new staff. 17. Assist manager/supervisor in the review of the quality and appropriateness of individual therapy programs and procedures. 18. Assists manager/supervisor in clinical observations and provides objective feedback on peer performance evaluations. 19. Takes initiative to further clinical skills and professional development. Accepts and implements suggestions from constructive criticism. 20. Articulates and integrates safety policies and procedures into daily practice, and mentors others in doing the same. 21. Participates in student program. Provides clinical supervision of students in an effective manner. Provides feedback to student regularly and constructively. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS - Licensed by the State of Washington as a Speech Language Pathologist. - A Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology/Audiology or Communicative Disorders. OR Documentation of American Speech-Language-Hearing Association approved equivalent to the Master’s degree consisting of approved curriculum and student practicum hours. AND A Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
DESIRED: - Five years of experience as a speech pathologist or equivalent is preferred. - Strongly prefer experience/competencies in Acute Medical-Surgical hospital units, including Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) and Videofluoroscopic Swallowing Studies (VFSS).
