GENERAL SUMMARY A Molecular Technologist works in a laboratory setting and performs a variety of duties to analyze samples. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION/COMPETENCIES Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Follows established Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), laboratory policies, and reports non-conformance to supervisor. Ensures appropriate management and handling of patient specimens. Assists with administrative duties including writing and maintaining procedures, completing proficiency testing, and monitoring, documenting and maintaining supply inventory as needed. Maintenance of instruments, including keeping appropriate records, troubleshooting and performing and/or requesting repairs as necessary. Ensures and monitors proper use and consumption of reagents, materials and consumables. Performs other related duties as required for optimal clinical testing. Assists with the development, optimization, and validation of new tests under direction of the laboratory medical director and supervisor. Performs manual or automated clinical laboratory tests using molecular methods such as DNA/RNA extraction from blood, urine, and Formalin-Fixed Paraffin-Embedded Tissue (FFPE), PCR, Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), Sanger sequencing, or fragment analysis. Performs validation of quality control material, and new lots of reagents, as well as required instrument function checks, preventative maintenance, and calibrations. Maintains appropriate documentation and reports irregularities. Performs other position related duties as assigned. CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSURES OR REGISTRY REQUIREMENTS Medical Technologist license as required by state. ASCP certification preferred. KNOWLEDGE | SKILLS | ABILITIES Knowledge of general laboratory practices and procedures. Knowledge in healthcare systems operations such as EMR. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail. Demonstrated ability to work in a high-volume environment with short turnaround times. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently and manage deadlines. Complies with all health and safety policies of the organization. Complies with HIPAA regulations for patient confidentiality. EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS Bachelor's Degree in a Biological Science - Biology, chemistry, Biochemistry, Neuroscience or similar majors required. Master's Degree in related filed preferred. EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS 1-2 years of experience with clinical molecular or clinical laboratory testing preferred. Experience with NGS or Sanger sequencing is highly preferred. A strong molecular biology background required. REQUIRED TRAVEL N/A
