Job Summary: The Long-Term Substitute Speech Language Pathologist for elementary school is responsible for use of speech, hearing, language theories, principles and skills in order to: identify, evaluate and remediate communication and psycholinguistic disorders, facilitate change, and assume collaborative roles with general and special education teachers, administrators, other school personnel, and parents in the areas of language, speech and hearing impairments and their relation to the learning process. This individual must have strong clinical skills in the use of AAC devices and language aquisition and language development. The caseload consists of working with one preschool classroom and with students in our BLAST program. The BLAST program services students K-5 who require one on one direct instruction due to their complex needs.
General Statement of Duties:
Uphold administrative regulations, school rules, policies as determined by the state and local board of education and negotiated agreements. Conduct multi-factored assessments of children and adolescents as appropriate. Conduct all evaluations with explicit regard for the ethical standards established for the profession, and maintain regard for principles of non-biased assessment. Serve as a member of the Planning and Placement Team in evaluating, reviewing, placing, and/or developing educational plan for referred youngsters. Identify, evaluate, and remediate exceptional communication and psycholinguistic behavior demonstrated by individual children. Identify and refer to medical consultants all children demonstration significant changes in hearing acuity. Serve as a member of Interdisciplinary Team and work collaboratively to enhance student learning through the development of programs, curriculum, teaching strategies and materials. Provide direct and collaborative service which is closely linked to and connected with the youngster's environment. Facilitate staff awareness of program planning/ management and the delivery of services by assisting those who play major roles in the educational system (i.e., parents, school personnel, community agencies); facilitate cooperative, collegial working relations with the district personnel while assisting them in understanding the role of Speech-Language Pathologist. Develop and maintain a system of reporting and record keeping consistent with district requirements; report student progress and special needs to parents and staff. Incorporate principles of Mastery Teaching, as appropriate to the field, in sessions with students. Participate on district committees in areas which are relevant to the field or role of Speech Pathologist. Enhance professional knowledge and remain current in the field and in assessment by participating in professional development experiences; maintain professional and ethical standards as set forth by ASHA. Carry out assignments as specified by the Superintendent or designee
Qualifications:
Must possess or be eligible for Speech and Language Pathologist Connecticut certification. (061). Connecticut State Department of Health license as Speech Pathologist. Experience in school setting; interdisciplinary experience preferred. Certificate of Clinical Competency (C.C.C.) preferred. Strong oral and written communication skills. Strong leadership abilities and legal knowledge of educational law. Strong ability to work collaboratively with all stakeholders.
Terms of Employment: Position to start in March or April of 2025 and continue through the entire 2025-2026 school year. Benefits and salary in accordance with the negotiated agreement between the Berlin Board of Education and the Berlin Education Association; $57,034.00 MA Step 1 - $108,038.00 Ph.D. Max.
