Under the direction of the Lead Desktop Systems Administrator within User Services, the Desktop Systems Administrator is responsible for providing advanced technology support to the university community in the use of Apple-based and Windows technologies.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Provides technology support for university-wide operating systems and software deployment systems with a specific focus on, but not limited to, the macOS environment. Provides leadership in the planning for installation and support of enterprise-wide operating systems and application deployment to managed desktop deployments from the Computer Renewal Program (CRP). Develops and maintains both macOS and Windows operating system images and the application deployment processes for university devices. This includes employee computers in departmental offices, mobile computers at remote locations, and devices in university computer or research labs. Maintains macOS/Apple management servers and management ecosystem connected to the various macOS computing environments (general labs, specialty labs, employee desktops and laptops). Supports the maintenance of the Windows management ecosystem as directed by the Lead Desktop System Administrator. Coordinates the planning, installation, and configuration, of all software applications installed on the desktop or servers under the guidance of the Lead Desktop Systems Administrator. Works collaboratively with User Services and other Information Technology colleagues to provide advanced technology desktop and application support to faculty, staff and student labs in the conduct of teaching, research, and administrative operations, with a focus on Mac devices. Supports the User Services department and Computer Renewal Program in the planning and evaluation of technology equipment, systems, and services. Provides direct technical support in the implementation of new technology and troubleshooting for all computer software and hardware operational problems. Performs other duties as assigned that are appropriate for the position. Education and Experience
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university, with preference for a degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Technology or a related field. Three (3) years of experience working with in an enterprise-level IT environment leveraging configuration management systems for large scale software image and application deployments, with proven experience in macOS management and deployment. Experience with the following technologies required: macOS, Unix/Linux, Client Management solutions (eg. Intune, Munki), Microsoft Active Directory and Azure AD, 802.1x network authentication. Experience with the following technologies preferred: Git, Docker, Microsoft Configuration Manager, Microsoft Windows (11 & 10), Scripting Languages (e.g. Python, PowerShell). Competencies/Skills Required
Valid driver's license. Experience planning, developing, operating, and maintaining a managed macOS computer management and deployment ecosystem. Experience with Mac and PC computer hardware support and software installations and configuration in a support related role. Previous technology support or help desk experience in a Higher Education environment desired. Ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of users with different computing requirements and backgrounds. Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, and ability to work independently are required.
