Position Highlights
This position reports to the Senior Associate Director of The A Center, a unit within the Office of the Provost, Undergraduate Education. The Academic Advisor II provides academic advising and programming assistance in areas such as major exploration, academic probation services, and student retention. This individual will provide instruction for success and major exploration courses. Academic Advisor II to support the recruitment, retention, and engagement of students in The A Center. This position will serve as the front-line contact for undergraduate students for developmental academic advising to drive engagement and empower students to achieve their academic and career goals. Plays a vital role in maximizing undergraduate student retention. Builds formative relationships with students by interpreting information and providing clarification on procedures and academic requirements of specific programs or majors. Academic advisors have the authority to approve students' academic degree programs, including evaluating transfer credit and making exceptions to the program requirements under the auspices of their respective faculty.


The A Center supports undecided/undeclared students, as well as Pre-Profession (Pre-Health and Pre-Law) student services. In addition, this position assists in hosting and participating in special events such as the annual Meet Your Major, Pre-Health, and Pre-Law Expos.

Duties & Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Provide developmental advising, support for major exploration advising, and programs to meet the specific needs of the following student populations: first-year and continuing undergraduate students who are undecided (No Major Selected), pre-majors, students seeking alternative majors; students who have been academically excluded from competitive majors; and/or students who are on academic warning/probation or who have been academically ineligible from the University.
  • Provide general education academic advising and registration assistance to students enrolled in The A Center.
  • Evaluate the use of transfer credit and determine whether degree requirements are met.
  • Collaborate with The A Center team to provide quality programs and services, including new student Orientation.
  • Represents unit on university committees to initiate change and resolve issues related to academic issues as a subject expert.
  • Responsible for programming designed to support A Center students to get back to academic eligibility (i.e., success path).
  • Assists with programming designed to help students get back to academic eligibility.
  • Facilitate related workshops and presentations.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of departmental mission, goals, objectives, and programs.
  • Demonstrated effective communication with diverse student populations.
  • Demonstrated excellent communication and presentation skills and proactive, open, and responsive interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate with diverse student populations effectively and professionally, university personnel, representatives from businesses, and the community.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with university personnel: faculty, college deans, administrators, and staff, as well as representatives from business and the community.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations.
  • Knowledge of student development theory.
  • Knowledge of advising practices and principles.
  • Ability to travel (locally, regionally and/or nationally); hold a valid driver's license.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and perform duties autonomously.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends, as needed.
  • Ability to work closely and effectively with multiple departments, organizations, and individuals in a complex environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, (PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, and Excel).
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience is required.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Higher Education, Counseling, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated successful experience working with post-secondary students.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of a website and social media that provides information and resources relevant to Pro-Profession (Pre-Health and Pre-Law) students, faculty, and staff supporting them.
  • Two or more years of demonstrated and successful experience in teaching freshman-level courses at a two-year college or four-year undergraduate college/university.
  • Proficiency with the University of Arizona Student Information System (UAccess).
