Current vacancy exists in the Operations Specialty Construction section of the Water Utility Division.
The City of San Bernardino Municipal Water Department is seeking a self-starter able to work in a fast-paced environment responsible for performing journey level skilled an technical work in in one of the following areas: construction and maintenance of pipelines and water services; construction work in the fabrication and assembly of utility water projects; testing, overhauling, and repairing of water meters; or diagnosis and correction of water service problems including meter failures, leaks, and valve problems.
The class of Water Utility Worker III is the advanced journey level in the Water Utility Worker series. Incumbents at this level have advanced journey level knowledge and skills in three or more of the skilled crafts, mechanical, and construction trades and provide regular safety training, coaching and mentoring to less experienced worker. Incumbents perform a broad range of moderately complex to complex tasks and duties in their assigned area. Incumbents are expected to use sound and independent judgment in carrying out job assignments and serve in the absence of the Water Utility Lead Worker.
The ideal candidate will have graduated from high school, or the equivalent, three years of progressively responsible experience in water system construction, installation, maintenance, or repair, a valid California State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) Water Distribution Operator Grade 2 certificate, and a valid California Class "B" driver's license with air brake and tanker endorsements and valid Medical Examiner's Certificate appropriate for the equipment to be operated.

Minimum Qualifications
Education:
Graduation from high school or GED/equivalent,

Experience:
Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in water system construction, installation, maintenance or repair,
And
Certificates:
Must have and maintain a California State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) Water Distribution Operator Grade 2 certificate. Must submit a copy of the required SWRCB Water Distribution Operator Grade 2 certification at the time of application.
Necessary Special Requirements
Possession of a valid California Class "B" commercial driver's license valid for the operation of both manual and automatic transmission vehicles/equipment with air brake and tanker endorsements and valid Medical Examiner's Certificate appropriate for the equipment to be operated is required upon application. Possession of a valid California Class "A" commercial driver's license valid for the operation of both manual and automatic transmission vehicles/equipment with air brake and tanker endorsements, and valid Medical Examiner's Certificate appropriate for the equipment to be operated is required six months after appointment. Note: For out-of-state applicants, a valid driver's license is required, and a valid California Class "B" driver's license valid for the operation of both manual and automatic transmission vehicles/equipment with air brake and tanker endorsements and Medical Examiner's Certificate appropriate for the equipment to be operated is required within ten (10) days of appointment (CA Vehicle Code 12505c) A valid California Class "A" commercial driver's license valid for the operation of both manual and automatic transmission vehicles/equipment with air brake endorsement, tanker endorsement, and valid Medical Examiner's Certificate appropriate for the equipment to be operated is required six (6) months after appointment.
An employee within this classification may be designated as a "key responder" and as such shall be required to respond to non-normal working hour emergency operational conditions.
Must be clean shaven or trimmed facial hair in order to properly use personal respirators and SCBA equipment. Must pass a respirator medical exam and be physically able to wear SCBA equipment. Must be able to work in enclosed spaces while wearing protective clothing under extreme temperatures and hazardous environment.
There may be additional special requirements, depending on assignment.
Physical Tasks and Environmental Conditions
Work involves exposure to potential physical harm, hazardous chemicals, and infectious disease including smoke, fumes, gas, treated water, high frequency noise, dirt, dust, grease, oil, chemicals, solvents and toxic agents. Incumbents need to be able to tolerate unpleasant odors, wet conditions, and uncomfortable climatic conditions. There is frequent need to stand, stoop, walk, crawl, climb, and perform other similar actions during the course of the workday.
Incumbents require sufficient mobility to work in a field setting in varying weather conditions, to operate hand tools and mechanical and motorized equipment, to transport materials and supplies weighing up to 75 pounds, and to travel to various locations. Must be able to see in the normal visual range with or without correction with vision sufficient to see color and read small print as well as distance. Must be able to hear in the normalaudio range with or without correction. Employee accommodations for physical or mental disabilities will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Retirement for New Members
- For employees hired 1/1/2013 or later and who are not a member of the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) or a reciprocal agency as of 12/31/12, or those who have been separated from a public agency which contracts with CalPERS or a reciprocal agency for six months or more, the retirement benefit shall be
2% @ 62 ; 3 year final compensation. New members will be obligated to pay 50% of the "normal cost" of their retirement benefits as required by State law.
