Position Overview

The Buyer 1 teammate is responsible for the procurement of materials to support manufacturing processes, managing inventory levels, collaborating with suppliers, and contributing to cost optimization strategies. This role requires strong decision-making, analytical, and negotiation skills to ensure material availability while driving efficiency and cost savings.

Essential Job Tasks

Material Procurement
  • Purchase materials required for manufacturing processes.
  • Negotiate prices, discounts, and transportation terms with suppliers to optimize costs.
  • Examine, select, and order materials based on quality, quantity, and specification requirements.
  • Authorize payments and handle returns of materials as necessary.
Inventory Management
  • Maintain inventory levels to support daily production needs.
  • Monitor and analyze inventory levels, usage history, sales trends, and economic conditions to anticipate material requirements.
  • Manage the movement of materials and sub-assemblies within operations, including remanufactured processes.
  • Participate in inventory activities, including cycle counts, spot counts, and physical inventory audits.
Supplier Collaboration & Supplier Negotiation
  • Work with suppliers to obtain or develop materials that meet production requirements.
  • Evaluate the quality, value, and yield of materials through inspections.
  • Analyze environmental factors and conduct price comparisons to make sustainable purchasing decisions.
  • Engage in contract negotiations with suppliers to secure favorable terms.
Cost Management and Analysis
  • Input cost information into Ponderosa for accurate manufacturing cost calculations.
  • Perform cost analyses, evaluate market trends, and assess environmental aspects of competing materials.
Strategic and Administrative Support
  • Discuss business strategies, practices, and policies with management to align purchasing with company goals.
  • Provide information and collaborate with internal teams, including sales, production, and engineering, to support operational needs.
  • Analyze market conditions and logistics methods to enhance efficiency and reduce environmental impact.
Buyer 1 Work Activities:
  • Information Gathering: Collect and document relevant data from multiple sources.
  • Communication and Collaboration: Maintain constructive working relationships with internal and external teams through various communication channels.
  • Computer Proficiency: Use data entry and analysis tools to process information accurately.
  • Decision-Making and Problem-Solving: Analyze information to identify solutions and make informed decisions aligned with company goals.
  • Resource Management: Monitor budgets, costs, and resource allocation to support purchasing processes.
  • Conflict Resolution and Negotiation: Resolve disputes, address complaints, and negotiate terms with suppliers constructively.
  • Strategic Planning: Develop plans to prioritize and accomplish tasks effectively.
  • Quality Assessment: Assess material quality and performance while developing long-term procurement strategies.
Qualifications:

Required
  • Associate degree in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a related field OR equivalent relevant experience.
  • 2+ years of experience in procurement, purchasing, or inventory management in a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong negotiation and relationship-building skills with vendors/suppliers.
  • Proficiency with ERP systems (e.g., Ponderosa, SAP, or similar) and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred
  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Business, or a related discipline.
  • Experience with cost analysis and sustainable purchasing strategies.
  • Familiarity with cycle counting and inventory management practices.
  • Certification in procurement (e.g., APICS, CPSM, or CPIM).
