NATURE OF JOB:
Under general supervision, the Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Mechanic conducts complex and difficult auto mechanic work including repair and maintenance of gas, diesel, fire apparatus and heavy equipment. Employee conducts complete mechanic work including preventive maintenance, proper documentation of work, maintenance and safeguard of working tools and equipment, maintenance of safe and clean working area and correct and utilization of proper maintenance and repair procedures. Employee has daily contact with the public and other departments, which requires simple courtesies and exercise of tact and diplomacy. This position reports to the Emergency Services Fleet Manager.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Reviews work/job orders with supervisor to obtain descriptions of vehicle problems, and to discuss work to be performed and future repair requirements.
  • Plans work/job order procedures, using charts, technical manuals, and experience, preparing time-tables for completion of job and cost estimate used in purchasing parts.
  • Diagnoses, adjusts, re-aligns and/or repairs automobiles, trucks, fire apparatus equipment and all types of County vehicles, including diesel and/or gasoline powered on and off- road equipment with little to no assistance.
  • Utilizes using hand tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, pressure gauges, and precision instruments, as well as power tools, jacks and hoists.
  • Inspects, tests, and listens to defective vehicles/equipment to determine the extent of damage or malfunction(s).
  • Raises cars, vans, pick-up trucks, light to heavy-duty trucks, and heavy parts and/or equipment using hydraulic jacks or electrical hoists.
  • Repairs and services automotive electronic apparatus such as engine controls, safety restraint systems, and anti-lock brake systems.
  • Repairs and changes tires on all types of vehicles and equipment in the field or shop.
  • Responds to emergency road service as directed; changes tires, diagnoses problems and makes repairs, or transports vehicles to the appropriate facility for repair.
  • Requisitions parts, supplies and the components to facilitate timely repair and maintenance of equipment and vehicles.
  • Follows checklists to ensure all important parts are examined, including belts, hoses, steering systems, spark plugs, brake and fuel systems, wheel bearings, adjusting protective guards, tightening loose bolts, replace/adjust headlights and other potentially troublesome areas as well as specified safety devices ensuring that they are in proper operating condition.
  • Performs routine maintenance such as oil changes, tune-ups, checking batteries and lubricating equipment and machinery.
  • Keeps working area clean and orderly.
  • Conducts work activities in a safe and responsible manner.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Possess a high school diploma or the equivalent; AND
  • Four (4) years' work experience as a diesel mechanic.
  • A comparable amount of training and/or education may be substituted for the minimum qualifications, with the exception of the required licensure.
LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS:
  • Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a valid Florida driver license upon offer of employment with a driving record acceptable to the County Driving Policy and insurance program, with ability to obtain and maintain Florida Commercial Driver's license (minimum Class B) within a period of six (6) months from date of employment
  • Must possess and maintain Fire Apparatus Technician certification(s) appropriate for the system or components.
  • Must possess and maintain Medium/Heavy Truck certification(s) appropriate for the system or component (Certifications T1 through T8), as demonstrated by current ASE certification or EVT (Fire Apparatus) certification.
  • Must possess and maintain current EVT (Fire Apparatus) Master Level 1 is required. (Level 2 is desired, and Level 3 is highly desire.)
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
  • Knowledge of all phases (technical and mechanical) of both diesel and gasoline powered vehicles and equipment to perform the tasks as assigned in an effective and expedient manner.

  • Ability to perform the specific diagnostic check, maintenance or repair task, or performance tests specified in National Fire Protection Association Standard (NFPA) 1911, Standard for the Inspection, Maintenance, Testing, and Retirement of In-Service Automotive Fire Apparatus, current edition.
  • Ability to work with various city departments and other public entities.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers customers, media, the public and management.
  • Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts in specific repair problems.
  • Ability to maintain shop records.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral or written instructions, to work from diagrams and sketches and repair broken parts.
  • Ability to work with all mechanical tools, diagnostic equipment, soldering iron and other small tools and hand-held tools required to perform maintenance/repairs.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
Work is primarily performed outdoors in varying and adverse weather; work in water, brush and ditches. Work requires moderate exposure to one or more disagreeable conditions (i.e., irate customers, inclement weather, excessive noise, extreme temperatures, odors or dust).

This position requires some exposure or risk to physical health and/or physical safety (e.g., exposure to environmentally hazardous material, heavy equipment, etc.). This position may require the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and may include completing and successfully passing medical evaluations.

Stooping, sitting, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, seeing far away, kneeling, reaching, pulling, talking, standing, finger movement, repetitive motions, depth perception. Ability to frequently lift and carry equipment 25-50lbs. and on occasion up to 100 pounds; manual dexterity and mobility; intermittent exertion when performing duties.

WORK LOCATION:
Not Eligible for Remote Work - This position is assigned to a county worksite. Due to the non-portable nature of the essential functions of this position, this position is not eligible for telework.
