Purpose Statement

The job of Elementary School Counselor is done for the purpose/s of providing support to the instructional process with specific responsibility of addressing student's academic, career and social/emotional development needs by designing, implementing, evaluating and enhancing a comprehensive school counseling program that promotes and enhances student success for all students. Providing information and recommendations to students and parents. This job is distinguished from similar jobs by the following characteristics: The Elementary School Counselor has greater focus on social needs. This job reports to Assigned Administrator

Essential Functions
  • Assesses student needs (e.g. academic, behavioral, social, etc.) for the purpose of developing and implementing plans to support educational objectives.
  • Assists teachers and staff with assessing students' behavioral needs (e.g. conducting student observation, participating in assessment meetings, etc.) for the purpose of determining student needs and developing recommendations.
  • Collaborates with a variety of groups and/or individuals (e.g. parents, teachers, CPS, police, physicians, administration, outside agencies, community resources, other professionals, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information, resolving issues and providing services in compliance with established guidelines.

  • Maintains a wide variety of records (e.g. academic probation contracts, evaluations, progress reports, teacher/parent/student correspondence, grade checks, etc.) for the purpose of complying with state requirements, documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information
  • Monitors students' progress (e.g. academics, attendance, behavior, etc.) for the purpose of identifying issues and taking appropriate action for increasing student success.
  • Participates in meetings, workshops, and seminars (e.g. multidisciplinary evaluation teams, intervention team, team meetings, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Experience: Job related experience within a specialized field is required.
Education: Masters degree in job-related area.
