The Phlebotomist plays a crucial role in serving patients by preparing specimens for laboratory testing and performing necessary screening standards. This position requires the Phlebotomist to draw high-quality blood samples while maintaining an atmosphere of trust and confidence. The role demands strong technical skills, professionalism, and an ability to effectively interact with patients to ensure their comfort and the integrity of specimen collection.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform blood draws and other specimen collections (e.g., urine, fecal) according to established procedures.
- Properly label specimens, centrifuge them, and manage specimen data and maintenance records.
- Greet patients and customers with courtesy, ensuring clear communication about the collection process.
- Explain the venipuncture procedure or other specimen collection methods in a clear, calm, and courteous manner to reduce patient anxiety.
- Demonstrate proficiency in using straight needles and/or butterfly needles for blood collection.
- Accurately match laboratory requisition forms with specimen tubes and ensure proper labeling.
- Handle specimen processing by splitting, freezing, and storing as per test orders and protocols.
- Package specimens for transport, ensuring proper handling and temperature storage to maintain specimen integrity.
- Ensure all specimens are processed and stored correctly, following specific procedures and maintaining OSHA and DEP regulatory compliance.
- Answer patient and lab inquiries, including telephone calls and reading lab results.
- Attend annual department training sessions to stay current on procedures and best practices.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by management.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment (Certification is required for states like CA, LA, NV, and WA).
Required Qualifications:
- Experience: Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to work independently in a high-pressure environment.
- Excellent patient interaction skills, both in-person and over the phone.
- Strong communication skills to explain procedures clearly and calmly to patients.
- Ability to maintain a professional and calming demeanor, reducing patient anxiety.
- Experience with laboratory or medical office operations is a plus.
