Under the general supervision of the Manager and according to the established policies and procedures, plans and administers treatment and therapy programs designed to assist patients having various cognitive and physical disabilities to achieve their highest level of functional independence. Also responsible for performing job duties in accordance with the mission, vision and values of Tampa General Hospital.
In accordance with the mission of the Tampa General Hospital Neurologic Residency Program which is to provide practicing physical therapists an advanced level of clinical training that will enable the resident to take a leadership role in the treatment of individuals with functional limitations associated with neurological deficits. The resident will promote evidence based practice and advanced clinical reasoning in the treatment of clients with neurological disorders. The care provided will reflect a patient centered approach. Our residents will apply the advanced skills in the field of neurological PT across the continuum of care and lifespan of patients with neurological disorders. The resident will have weekly mentoring by a experienced clinicians, participate in didactic learning experiences, as well as complete additional learning opportunities through live patient exams and evidence based projects.
Tampa General Hospital Neurologic Residency Program Mission:
The mission of the Tampa General Hospital Neurologic Residency Program is to provide practicing physical therapists an advanced level of clinical training that will enable them to take a leadership role in the treatment of individuals with functional limitations associated with neurological deficits. The program will promote evidence based practice and advanced clinical reasoning in the treatment of clients with neurological disorders. The care we provide will reflect a patient centered approach. Our residents will apply the advanced skills in the field of neurological PT across the continuum of care and lifespan of patients with neurological disorders.
Tampa General Hospital Neurologic Residency Program Goals:
1. The program will prepare the resident for successful completion of the ABPTS neurologic specialty examination.
2. Promote best practice through the application of scientific principles, evidence based practice and patient focused treatment for people with neurologic disorders.
3. Support the mission of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) by creating practitioners of choice in a specific area of practice with advanced specialty certification.
4. The program will uphold the mission of TGH by providing an increased number of clinicians with an advanced level of clinical training and education in the area of neurologic physical therapy.
5. The program will promote teaching at the local and regional level.
6. Promote highest level of professionalism and communication with all stakeholders.
7. The program will be individualized to each resident based on their entry skills and their self-assessment through use of the APTA self assessment tool for neurologic physical therapy.
The Residency Program is a 13 month program and involves ten week rotations in the following settings:
• Neurologic Acute Hospital Care including the Neuro Intensive Care Unit (TGH is a Level 1 Trauma Center)
• Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility SCI
• Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility CVA
• Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility BI
• Outpatient Neurologic Rehabilitation
The resident will also be in pediatrics for 4 weeks in various setting including Neonatal ICU, Acute Hospital Care, Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation, and Outpatient. Additional learning opportunities will be in the Wheelchair Seating and Mobility Clinic and the Locomotor Training Program.
Clinical training will include managing a caseload of patients with neurologic involvement and mentoring with highly experienced faculty. Our faculty has many certifications including three Board Certified Specialist Neurologic Physical Therapy, two Assistive Technology Professionals and Seating and Mobility Specialist, one NDT Certified PT, three Certified Brain Injury Specialists, one LSVT Big Certified PT, and six APTA CI Credentialed therapists. The didactic component of the program will be presented by The Neurologic Physical Therapy Professional Education Consortium.
The resident will be employed by Tampa General Hospital and will qualify for the benefits package provided by TGH. As a TGH employee, all policies and procedures including all Human Resources policies and procedures, will apply to the resident.
Qualifications
Residency Admission Requirements:
The following are prerequisites for an applicant to apply for TGH neurologic residency:
1. Graduate of a CAPTE accredited physical therapy program. (at start time of residency)
2. Hold in good standing a current license to practice PT in the state of Florida (temporary license is acceptable, residents must disclose to program director examination date at time of admission to program).
3. Meet all eligibility requirements to be employed as a practicing PT within TGH.
4. Submit current resume or CV.
5. Member APTA.
6. 3 references from PTs one from academia and one who has directly worked with applicant in clinical setting (such as CI or PT supervisor).
7. Most up to date transcript from all Universities attended.
