Summary:
The Clinical Outcomes Nurse Specialist is responsible, accountable and has the authority for patient and financial outcomes that result from the quality of care within an assigned patient population. Integrating excellent communication skills, leadership, decision-making abilities, and advanced knowledge and clinical skills, the Clinical Outcomes NurseSpecialist continuously strives for improvements in the delivery and outcomes of patient care. The Clinical Outcomes Nurse Specialist provides direction for changes in nursing care, based on research, acts as a professional role model and clinical consultant while functioning as a special project coordinator. Demonstrates excellent customer service performance in that his/her attitude and actions are consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission and Values of Covenant HealthCare and the commitment to Extraordinary Care for Every Generation.
Responsibilities:
Contributes to the organization success targets for net operating margin.
Participates in cost containment efforts through efficient use of supplies, services, time management and role modeling efficient patient care practices.
Adheres to unit/department budgetary practices.
Supports the organization's patient flow though compliance to unit and Patient Services policies.
Demonstrates excellent behaviors that enhance the patient experience.
Communicates with patients and families in a professional, therapeutic, and courteous manner.
Has clinical and social contact with patients, including all age groups, and is able to appropriately assess, care for and treat them according to the guidelines as defined by Covenant HealthCare.
Analyzes practice and designs multidisciplinary interventions for implementation and testing toward achievement of evidenced based or best practice for patient population.
Collaborates with the health care team to develop care methods (plan of care, algorithms, protocols, order sets, clinical practice guidelines) for specific patient populations and for Patient Services.
Documents all patient care observations and interventions in the electronic record accurately, clearly, in a timely manner following all established policies.
Evaluates patient care practices, integrating research based therapeutics and continuous quality improvement to enhance outcomes. Writes/revises guidelines and practice policy based on research.
Provides leadership to the health care team to develop, implement and evaluate new patient care programs and outcome goals specific to the patient population.
Prepares and presents periodic outcomes reports for assigned patient population.
Coordinates, develops and evaluates patient and family education for effectiveness and cultural appropriateness.
Clinical in-service and competency training.
Recommends proposed therapeutics (drugs, equipment, products) based on an analysis of evidence based practice, cost-effectiveness, clinical efficacy, and efficiency.
Facilitates and conducts outcomes research in collaboration with staff and other disciplines.
Demonstrates effective practice, situational leadership while working within the framework of Covenant's mission, vision, and values.
Participates in patient care and unit activities to achieve compliance with all regulatory requirements.
Maintains professional development through seminars, workshops, in-service activities, and current professional literature.
Serves as a physician liaison and works collaboratively with physicians to develop plans of care.
Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Current Michigan licensure to practice as an RN.
Masters of Science in Nursing Degree (MSN) required or enrolled in a MSN program with completion within two (2) years of hire or transfer will be considered. Clinical specialties may include, but not limited to, Education, Clinical Nurse Specialist or Clinical Nurse Leader.
Master's degree in a non-healthcare related program will be considered.
Minimum of three (3) years experience in clinical specialty area required.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
Computer competence, including Microsoft Office and Outlook.
Knowledge of standard office equipment.
Clinical expertise.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Must be able to work well with the public and able to be tactful in often hectic and stressful situations.
Sound judgement in handling confidential or sensitive issues and material.
Accurately abstracts data through concurrent and/or retrospective medical record review. Reviews data for trends and identification of potential causative factors. Submits data to appropriate database as indicated.
Ability to develop and lead teams.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
Frequent standing, walking, sitting, pushing, pulling, twisting, reaching, handling, fingering, feeling, talking and hearing.
Frequent depth perception, near, midrange and far vision.
Occasional lifting 0-50 lbs.
Occasional carrying, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching and squatting.
