The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. Position Responsibilities: Experience doing blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data, and decontamination. Updating patient information and collecting and storing specimens according to established procedures. Properly explaining the process of venipuncture and other specimen collections (e.g., urine or fecal) in a clear and courteous manner. Demonstrating techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles. Understanding all of the physicians' orders and matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes. Labeling, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing specimens as required by test orders. Checking all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy. Packaging specimens for transport and storing sample specimens according to required temperatures. Accurately labeling and following procedures outlined by specific protocols to maintain specimen integrity during transport. Understanding and complying with OSHA and DEP regulations. Attending annual department trainings. Answering telephone calls and reading laboratory results to satisfy inquiries. Qualifications: Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite. High School diploma or equivalent or Phlebotomy Certification.
