SUMMARY:

The Manager/Sr. Manager of Accounting is a hands-on managerial role and manages a team of accountants within the general/corporate accounting function. This role ensures that work is properly allocated, planned, and completed in a timely manner to result in accurate financial statements. Under the direction of, and in support of, Accounting department leadership, the Manager/Sr. Manager oversees, and actively participates in, assigned monthly, quarterly, and annual closing processes including financial statement reviews, account reconciliations, variance analysis, and audit schedules. The Manager/Sr. Manager serves as a proactive business partner, providing timely, insightful reporting and analysis in support of dynamic business needs. Responsibilities include, among others, coordinating duties among staff, evaluating and implementing process improvements, and both executing and monitoring control activities. The Manager/Sr. Manager will have contact with senior-level management which requires strong interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal. The successful candidate will be organized and detail oriented, able to adhere to strict deadlines, and maintain a high degree of accuracy while leading and developing the general/corporate accounting team and advancing the function.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Maintain and demonstrate a thorough understanding of general accounting systems, procedures, and GAAP
  • Ensure an accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and year-end close for assigned areas of responsibility
  • Ensure related balance sheet accounts are accurately reconciled monthly and are fully supported
  • Manage the monthly closing tasks for general/corporate accounting team, in compliance with the closing checklist and internal control procedures
  • Review and approve monthly assigned accounts and cost centers/departments, ensuring adequate commentary to address fluctuations in trend and variance to budget
  • Collaborate within overall accounting department leadership and staff to support achievement of overall department goals and objectives
  • Monitor and analyze work of direct reports to develop more efficient procedures, technology utilization and automation, and use of resources while maintaining a high level of accuracy
  • Advise staff regarding non-routine accounting transactions
  • Assist in development and implementation of new procedures to enhance the workflow of the department
  • Key functional role in accounting system upgrades and implementations
  • Prepares procedural documentation and training materials as needed
  • Provide hands-on training and development to new and existing staff as needed
  • Work with each direct report to establish goals and objectives and monitor progress to enhance the professional development of staff
  • Champions customer service and satisfaction, engaging key stakeholders in performance dialogues
  • Assists with maintaining the ERP, general ledger and chart of accounts
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Managerial/oversight experience leading people
  • Able to effectively lead, train, assess, coach, and motivate staff

  • Proven leadership and cross-functional teamwork skills
  • Hands-on, detailed-oriented
  • Large, automated, integrated accounting system proficiency. Great Plains knowledge is a plus.
  • Strong proficiency in Excel and Word
  • Strong business partner with ability to provide insightful analysis and presentations

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Required to work overtime as needed to meet accounting deadlines

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting required
  • Active CPA license preferred but not required
  • 5+ years of combined professional experience in corporate accounting and auditing/assurance
  • Public company/SOX internal controls experience preferred
  • 3+ years of experience managing accountants
  • Multi-unit, private club, hospitality or property management accounting experience is a significant plus
LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to read and interpret retail product labeling. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or associates of the organization.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
