The City of Wausau is now accepting applications for Part-Time Bus Drivers! Our Bus Operators provide excellent customer service in the performance of all duties and responsibilities associated with transit vehicle operations. Part-time Bus Drivers work 20 hours per week. During the school year, the hours are 6:40 a.m. to 8:40 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m., Monday through Friday. The part-time Bus Drivers drive the express routes that help with the increase of student riders before and after school. Summer hours are available and flexible, with 20 hours available per week (5 consecutive hours per day, 4 days per week).
Experience is desired, but not required. The Metro Ride Department will train! Paid training for all new hires! Paid training to obtain a Commercial Driver's License!

New employees may not use vacation during the first 6 months of employment. Personal Holidays: Part-time employees receive 3 personal holidays every January 1st. Each personal holiday is 6 hours. Personal holidays must be used in the year they are received. Sick Leave: Part-time employees receive a proration of the bi-weekly accrual equal to 4 hours per month of service, which accrues at 1.85 hours bi-weekly up to a maximum of 66 days (528 hours). Perfect Attendance Leave (PAL): PAL may be requested by employees who do not use any sick leave during a 6 month period of time, and may receive additional PAL for each 6 month period of time in which sick leave is not used.

The position requires operating in heavy traffic, inclement weather, and hazardous road conditions. Position requires the ability to work shifts, evenings, holidays, on-call and overtime.

At 12 months: $26.63
At 2 years: $27.92
At 4 years: $28.76
Schedule InformationThe Metro Ride Department hires drivers as part-time. Part-time Bus Operators may promote to full-time by seniority when vacancies occur.
The regular schedule for part-time Bus Drivers is 20 hours per week, 6:40 a.m. to 8:40 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m., Monday through Friday during the school year. Summer hours are available and flexible, with 20 hours available per week (5 consecutive hours per day, 4 days per week).

- Drives assigned transit vehicle in a safe manner on the route and time schedule specified in compliance with all local traffic regulations and Metro Ride operating policies.
- Operates and monitors fare boxes, electronic head signs, doors, lifts, and two-way radios.
- Performs a complete pre-trip and post-trip inspection of transit vehicles; informs dispatch and maintenance when adjustments or repairs are necessary.
- Provides schedule, route and fare information to passengers seeking assistance; communicates with dispatch to obtain additional information as needed.
- Supervises the conduct of individuals accepted as passengers while riding the bus and/or, when present, at Transit designated boarding and departure locations.
- Assists passengers using mobility devices onto and off of transit vehicles, secures mobility devices according to safety procedures.
- Must be punctual, reliable and maintain regular attendance in order to contribute individually to the efficient and effective delivery of transportation service to the general public.
- Completes all required forms, reports and documentation as required.
- Other job related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Valid Driver's License and good driving record
- Ability to obtain and maintain a medical examiner certificate (Fed Med Card) and State of Wisconsin Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air break and passenger endorsements are required within six (6) months of hire
- 1 or more years of experience operating large motor vehicles on public streets is desired, but not required
- Ability to provide excellent customer service including skills related to courtesy to passengers with disabilities; route announcements, responding to questions and providing information and direction to customers.
- Ability to be on-time and work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to operate a transit vehicle in accordance with federal and state laws, traffic laws, ordinances, rules and driving courtesies, calculate correct fares and complete required forms and written reports.
- Ability to speak clearly, to read and interpret written policies and instructions.
- Ability to handle stress and continue to perform all duties and provide service to the public in a courteous, responsible and timely manner.
- Ability to effectively work with other employees, supervisory personnel and the general public.
- Ability to maintain working knowledge of City streets, current bus routes and stops and bus fare structures, system policies and programs.
