COND 311 Ensemble Student Assistant

In order to participate in Berklee Student Employment, a student must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Current student at Berklee College of Music or Boston Conservatory at Berklee.
  • Enrolled at least half-time in a degree, diploma, or certificate-seeking undergraduate or graduate program. Summer is the only semester in which a student can maintain employment without being enrolled. In this case, the student must be pre-registered for the upcoming fall semester. This exception does not apply to fall or spring semesters.
  • Have a valid United States Social Security Number (SSN).
  • Remain in "valid" Visa status as applicable.
  • A minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA. Students in their first semester can work, even though they do not have an official GPA until the completion of their first semester.
  • Federal Work Study student may apply.
  • In good disciplinary standing.
  • Must be located in the U.S.

COND 311 is a course titled, "Advanced Conducting Seminar with Live Chamber Orchestra." This course is designed for students who wish to further their abilities in conducting. Emphasis is on rehearsal techniques and interpretation while working with a live chamber ensemble. The live chamber orchestra consists of 2 violins, 1 viola, 1 cello, 1 double bass, and 1 woodwind (flute/clarinet - preferably someone who can double). The players must be able to read and play Classical repertoire.

The player, hired for this Student Assistant position, needs to serve as a performing member of the ensemble as well as administrative assistant. Administrative roles include setting up and tearing down chairs for the ensemble every class, taking attendance and reporting via OL, and holding on to a library of sheet music for weekly use.

Students interested in this role must also apply to "COND 311 Ensemble Performers," and be hired and work in both roles. Students who do not submit an application to the "COND 311 Ensemble Performers" role will not be considered for this position.

There are a total of 6 players in this ensemble, and this course always meets on Mondays at 2pm, until 3:50pm.

The repertoire is mainly classical and the purpose of the ensemble is to work with student conductors in a laboratory setting under the guidance of conducting faculty.

We are looking to fill these positions:
  • 2 violins, 1 viola, 1 cello, 1 bass, 1 woodwind (flute/clarinet - preferably someone who can double)
Required Skills:
  • Well-versed in Classical repertoire and playing.
  • Ability to follow the conductor and make adjustments as necessary or suggested by the faculty.
  • Be on time, warm-up and ready to play, so that the class can start and finish on time.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Take attendance and report via OL.
  • Set up and tear down chairs for the ensemble every class.
  • Manage a library of sheet music for weekly use.
  • Other duties as assigned.
