Key Responsibilities
General Ledger Management
- Post transactions and categorize records in the general ledger to the appropriate GL accounts.
- Run journal reports and analyze entries for completeness and accuracy of A/P and A/R postings.
- Prepare reports with reconciliations and analysis of metrics and trends for A/R and A/P for management's review.
- Daily cash management: reconcile bank statements with (sub)ledgers; resolve variances; collaborate with accounting team on completeness of postings and variance resolution.
- Execute month- and year-end close activities to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting.
- Run trial balance and assist with schedules and accruals for month-end and year-end close, ensuring completeness and accuracy.
- Maintain and update schedules for fixed assets, capex, amortization/ depreciation, goodwill and prepaids.
- Support preparation of financial statements and management reports for executive review.
- Prepare reporting and analyze transactions with internal stakeholders for trends and drivers of variance to the budget.
- Assist with preparation of annual budgets/ forecasts and 13-week cash flow forecasts.
- Participate in special projects, ad-hoc reporting, and additional assignments to support Rees Scientific's financial and operational objectives.
- Apply critical thinking when analyzing journal entries and escalate potential issues to management.
- Document current processes, creating flow diagrams to identify gaps and areas for improvement; identify opportunities to enhance accounting processes and support automation initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with Rees Scientific's financial policies, accounting standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Assist with audits by gathering and organizing supporting documentation and schedules.
- Maintain proper documentation for all financial transactions, ensuring easy access for audit compliance.
- Commit to a minimum of 10 hours of annual training to broaden skill sets and knowledge in accounting and business leadership.
- Establish clear daily, weekly, and monthly goals for individual and team deliverables, regularly reviewing work for accuracy and completeness.
- Exhibit a comprehensive understanding of US GAAP, general ledger, journal entry postings, and reconciliations.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the three financial statements and the impact of journal entries on financial reporting.
- Utilize foundational Excel skills, including keyboard shortcuts, XLOOKUP, SUMIFS, pivot tables, filters, and data visualization techniques.
- Master relevant financial data systems (e.g., DBA, FoxPro) to extract data and prepare analyses with trends and visuals.
- Develop a thorough understanding of business operations and the impact of various departments on financial outcomes.
- Mentor junior colleagues to enhance their skills and overall performance.
- Exhibit flexibility by filling in for colleagues on PTO and training others on their responsibilities.
- Compose clear and purposeful emails, defining the request and timing of response.
- Present accounting trends, issues, and accomplishments to leadership clearly and directly, preparing comprehensive presentations on financial matters.
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years in accounting or finance roles.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel and experienced with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, SAP); familiarity with ERP systems is an asset.
- Strong focus on detail with a high level of accuracy in data entry and financial reporting.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Ability to proactively identify issues, analyze data, and recommend solutions to improve efficiency.
