Bus Driver Trainee

Reports To: Driver Personnel Manager
Duty Days: Approximately 20 but may vary based on training needed
Wage/Hour Status: Non-exempt
Pay Grade: A01
Qualifications:
College hours, high school diploma or GED (preferred)
Must be 18 years of age or older
Acceptable driving record as defined by TxDPS and Katy ISD
Pass annual physical in accordance with state law
Negative result on drug and/or alcohol test administered as pre-employment, random, post-accident and/or reasonable suspicion basis, in accordance with federal law and district policy
Able to obtain all Bus Driver qualifications within three months of hire date
Able to communicate in English in both written and oral
Able to read and interpret maps and routes
Able to climb in and out of all school bus emergency exits
Able to work productively without continual supervision
Primary Purpose:
Independently study in preparation for written tests with DPS. Obtain a CDL permit the will allow behind-the-wheel training. Observe and learn from CDL drivers currently on routes. Complete behind-the-wheel training. Pass DPS driving skills test to obtain a CDL.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Equipment Used:
School buses, emergency equipment (triangle reflectors, fire extinguisher, bodily fluids kit, etc.), two-way radio, wheel chair lift, securements, fuel pump, cleaning equipment (sanitizer, rag, towel, broom, mop, etc.).
Working Conditions:
Maintain emotional and physical control under stress. Prolonged driving, prolonged sitting, frequent standing and twisting, occasional kneeling/squatting, bending, stooping, pushing/pulling, moderate walking, frequently climbing stairs, grasping/squeezing, wrist and shoulder flexion/extension, and reaching. Frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, noise, dust, and vehicle fumes. Working around moving vehicles and vehicles/machinery with moving parts. Irregular hours and occasional prolonged hours.

- Operate any Katy ISD bus and related equipment in a safe and efficient manner while obeying all traffic laws and following Transportation Department guidelines and district policies.
- Learn and perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle and report any mechanical problems or damage.
- Report involvement in any accident, incident, or job-related injury in a timely manner.
- Obtain CDL permit.
- Complete behind-the-wheel training program.
- Pass DPS driving skills test and obtain CDL.
- Observe drivers on actual routes.
- Establish and maintain regular and reliable attendance.
- Read and follow established procedures and guidelines.
- Adhere to route assignment changes.
- Other duties as assigned.
