POSITION PURPOSE

Provide advanced technical expertise and leadership to design, recommend, implement, maintain, and troubleshoot the Company's Information Technology (IT) and Operational Technology (OT) network infrastructure, including switches, routers, firewalls, WAN/LAN communications, and Internet connectivity.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Manages the performance of a complex network via integration and support of primarily a Cisco hardware and software environment (including routers, switches, load balances, proxy servers, Internet-facing appliances, etc.).

Provides advanced information technology design of the LAN and WAN networks, provides technical leadership in projects, and consults across the organization.

Provides recommendations on the use of new products and services to management by analyzing emerging products.

Provides advanced network support by analyzing and resolving network hardware and software problems timely and accurately.

Manages and maintains firewall systems, including policy configuration, rule optimization, and performance tuning.

Performs regular updates, patches, and upgrades to ensure firewall and network components are up-to-date with the latest security enhancements.

Designs and implements network security policies and procedures to safeguard the organization's digital assets.

Provides advanced business resumption planning support by designing and implementing systems and data centers to reestablish servers, databases, and operating systems in the event of a disruption.

Provides recommendations on upgrades or improvements. Provides support on developing technical standards and application uses.

Performs complex problem source identification and recommends and implements appropriate mitigation to prevent problem recurrence.

Ensures reliability and integrity of infrastructure components by designing monitoring systems and solutions, designs and recommends review and evaluation processes, and executes capacity-planning activities.

Independently makes critical technical decisions, often outside of normal business hours or during stressful situations, to restore systems, perform maintenance, or complete assigned tasks ensuring system integrity, stability, and availability.

Able to work in a team environment or independently troubleshoot. Investigates and recommends network-related products or technologies required to enhance and/or maintain computing services and network and server infrastructure.

Performs problem source identification and recommends and implements appropriate mitigation in order to prevent problem recurrence.

Able to provide on-call coverage within a defined rotation.

Implements monitoring systems and solutions as necessary to ensure reliability and integrity of network infrastructure components. Executes network-related utilization and capacity-planning activities.

Performs planning, coordination, and communication for system changes, outages, and problems. Provides advice on technical solutions critical in meeting corporate goals.

Builds, tests, analyzes, and documents modifications and service procedures necessary to operate and sustain the corporate IT and SCADA OT network environments.

Creates, maintains, and reviews documentation for all network infrastructure systems.

Reviews existing policies and processes and recommends solutions that provide efficiencies in resource time and/or costs. Recommends modifications and upgrades to existing procedures to accommodate enhanced functionality or efficiencies.

Evaluates the implementation of new systems, network protections and requested changes to communication (e.g., firewall rules) based on overall risk, security best practices, and corporate standards.

Supports security-focused network solutions including SSL inspection, full-packet inspection and network authentication, and authorization technologies.

Maintains awareness of IT and OT computing and networking industry trends as they affect corporate systems, corporate users, and business-computing needs.

Evaluates and recommends technical modifications as necessary to meet effective business solutions.

Represents IT Technical Services and IT on large corporate initiatives and projects and provides network design, task development, time estimates, status updates, and network infrastructure expertise. Adheres to existing Project Portfolio Management and Technical Services lead project resource expectations and requirements.

Complies with incident and change management processes and ensures adherence to Sarbanes-Oxley Act and other applicable controls.

Builds trust and develops effective working relationships between infrastructure and IT/end-user teams; portrays IT Technical Services infrastructure design and services in a manner that increases the Company's confidence in technical offerings and abilities.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree, Associate's degree, or alternatively equivalent experience.

Industry certifications, education, working experience, or training in CCNA Routing and Switching are a plus.

Five or more years of experience with current network technologies.

Knowledge and Skills

IT and OT network systems implementation and support experience integrating and supporting Cisco hardware and software (including, but not limited to, routers, switches, load balancers, proxy servers, and Internet-facing appliances).

Full command of Cisco IOS Command.

Knowledge of Network Access Control.

Implementation and support experience with Checkpoint firewall systems, security appliances, and VPN hardware and software.

IT and OT systems support experience integrating and supporting multisite networks and mobile workforce needs.

Knowledge of implementing and maintaining common network technologies, including DNS, IP Routing, HTTP, QOS, NAT, IDS/IPS, VPN, SSL, Radius, SNMP, etc.

Knowledge of LAN/WAN topologies, network protocols, and routing/switching concepts.

Conceptual knowledge of server infrastructure.

Knowledge of utilizing common network sniffer tools to monitor, diagnose, and troubleshoot network-related problems with an understanding of the OSI model.

Maintenance of network security through proper configuration of networks, firewalls, and VPN appliances.

Knowledge of VoIP support.

General knowledge of network monitoring and management tools utilized for general environment support.

Able to provide network management implementation and support.

Strong analytical skills to translate user project needs into technical solutions.

Able to recognize system or component failures requiring expertise of vendors or contracted services.

Able to learn new technologies and apply them to existing and future business needs.

Able to multitask on projects of varying complexity.

Strong technical background, aptitude, and overall ambition.

Strong planning, verbal, writing, and interpersonal skills.

Able to effectively communicate with nontechnical management and staff.

Effective time management skills.

Scripting experience preferred (Batch, Python, and/or PowerShell, etc.).

The position is hybrid, and office days are in downtown Madison, Wisconsin, where MGE is an active participant in community efforts to preserve the area's extraordinary quality of life.
