DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW: As an organizational unit under Academic Affairs at UC San Diego, the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) is considered a leader in data-intensive computing and cyberinfrastructure, providing resources, services, and expertise to the national research community, including industry and academia. Cyberinfrastructure refers to an accessible, integrated network of computer-based resources and expertise, focused on accelerating scientific inquiry and discovery. SDSC supports hundreds of multidisciplinary programs spanning a wide variety of domains, from earth sciences and biology to astrophysics, bioinformatics, and health IT. SDSC launched Comet, a petascale supercomputer and will soon install Expanse. SDSC is a partner in XSEDE (eXtreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment), the most advanced collection of integrated digital resources and services in the world. The Research Data Services (RDS) Division of SDSC is responsible for providing a full range of CI services funded by recharge, contracts and grants and state funds. Services provided by the division include: Co-Location facility; server hosting and management (Windows, Linux and Solaris); Microsoft and Virtualized Services, networking; desktop support services; and data storage. POSITION OVERVIEW: The incumbent will apply IT professional concepts of moderate scope, department/unit, and campus/medical center/OP policies and procedures to resolve moderately complex issues in one or more IT areas of specialization. The incumbent will perform routine work, with detailed instructions provided on new projects of moderate complexity. The incumbent will follow standard practices and procedures in analyzing situations or data from which answers can be obtained through analysis. The incumbent is responsible for moderately complex operational support for the 19,000+ sq. ft. data center floor and supporting facilities, including high-end installations, archival systems operations and maintenance, visual inspections, and 1st line emergency response triage and actions. Responsibilities include equipment mapping and monitoring, administering and maintaining an equipment database, installing and configuring networking hardware, monitoring electrical and cooling levels, maintaining floor/ceiling structure and tiles, determining physical path of fiber optic cable runs within a conduit or direct between data center rooms or buildings, and landing fiber trunk cables into patch panels. The incumbent will work in conjunction with staff and vendors during all phases of planning and installation of systems, including coordination with vendors and UCSD personnel on both building facilities (power and environmental systems), as well as hardware/software installation for individual systems and/or large-scale computing clusters. The incumbent will support in various capacities the efforts of other UCSD/SDSC groups and divisions, including remote hands assistance, server installation and maintenance, planning / executing cross-connections between network switches and customer equipment, and maintenance of onsite security systems and software. QUALIFICATIONS

General knowledge of several areas of IT. General experience and skill in the concepts, principles, codes, standards, techniques and procedures of system and network administration and a very broad comprehension of principles and practices in related technical specialties.

Demonstrated ability to install software and troubleshoot and repair moderately complex problems with computing devices, peripherals and software. Understanding of system performance monitoring and actions that can be taken to improve or correct performance. Basic knowledge of incident response procedures. Demonstrated ability to follow software specifications

Ability to write technical documentation in a clear and concise manner. Skills in the interpretation of moderately complex installation and technical guidance.

Demonstrated experience in computer room activities, including the installation and removal of HPC equipment and proper floor management. Knowledge of electrical and cooling specifications and the ability to measure and monitor them.

Work experience and knowledge of safety procedures with regard to handling of hazardous/dangerous materials and equipment and knowledge of electrical, building, and fire safety codes and their applications.

Pay Transparency Act Annual Full Pay Range: $69,500 - $123,500 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%) Hourly Equivalent: $33.29 - $59.15 Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
