Job Description

General Summary:

The Director, Publications is accountable for the development of an integrated and strategic global disease publication plan and delivery of the medical, scientific and technical publications included in this plan. This role will manage publication plans and activities for large, complex brands or for multiple brands within a disease area. This role will provide leadership and expertise in publication planning and execution. This role is responsible for working with large cross-functional teams to communicate Vertex's scientific data through high quality peer-reviewed publications to the global healthcare community, enabling informed decision making for optimal patient care and access to Vertex products.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Develops an integrated and strategic global disease publication plan across large, complex brands or for multiple brands within a therapy area; works closely with regions to ensure publication needs are included in the global publication plan.
  2. Demonstrates project leadership and uses expertise to develop and implement creative solutions for challenging issues or manages complex publication projects, strategies, and plans (such as multiple products, multiple indications, diverse audiences, or projects requiring advanced integrative skills).
  3. Ensures all publications within the therapy area are aligned to the product/disease scientific platform.
  4. Develops key publications and manages and develops direct reports to contribute to key publications.
  5. Leads compliance with Vertex publication policy and external publication guidelines.
  6. Designs and leads staff and stakeholder education and training on publication process and best practices.
  7. Maintains compliant systems (Datavision), audit readiness, and metrics reporting.
  8. Oversees vendors and effectively implements insourcing/outsourcing strategies to meet business deliverables.
  9. As a people manager within the organization, this role may have financial accountabilities and human resource responsibilities for assigned staff.

Knowledge and Skills:

  1. Demonstrated ability to provide strategic input to senior leadership and influence decision making, particularly on topics regarding publication planning, data dissemination, and data disclosure requirements.
  2. Demonstrated record of executing strategically and tactically in a highly matrixed environment composed of cross-functional, dynamic teams.
  3. Clear understanding of current publication environment, ICMJE, GPP3, and other global guidelines related to publications, scientific data communication, and transparency standards.
  4. Strong computer and database skills, particularly with Microsoft Office products and Datavision.
  5. Ability to manage multiple vendors if needed.
  6. Experience in people management.
  7. Expertise in publication planning and execution.

Education and Experience:

  1. PhD is required.
  2. Typically requires 10 years of work experience and 3 years of supervisory/management experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Pay Range:

$190,700 - $286,000

Disclosure Statement:

The range provided is based on what we believe is a reasonable estimate for the base salary pay range for this job at the time of posting. This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements. Actual base salary pay will be based on a number of factors, including skills, competencies, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.

In this Remote-Eligible role, you can choose to be designated as:
1. Remote: work remotely five days per week and come into the office on occasion - you're always welcome on-site; or select
2. Hybrid: work remotely up to two days per week; or select
3. On-Site: work five days per week on-site with ad hoc flexibility.
