TxDOT's Austin District is looking for two General Engineering Technicians I or II for our Traffic Signal Crew based in Austin, TX. This position performs and coordinates advanced transportation engineering operations or maintenance support work such as complex maintenance; light and heavy equipment operation; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations.

Recruitment Bonus Available!

You may qualify for a one-time recruitment bonus up to $5000 if you have a Class "A" CDL License (preferably with no transmission restrictions) at time of hire. You must maintain 12-months of continuous employment with TxDOT and meet all other conditions. Current and Previous permanent employees (does not include Summer Internships) do not qualify for the Recruitment Bonus.

This position is for TWO General Engineering Tech I or II. The Texas Department of Transportation reserves the sole right in determining the level of position based on the applicant's work experience, education, skill level, and all other appropriate factors, and based on business needs.

Salary Plan/Grade:

General Engineering Technician I: A19 ($48,244/yearly - $76,028/yearly)

General Engineering Technician II: A20 ($51,158/yearly - $81,351/yearly)

Position Description

This position performs and coordinates advanced transportation engineering operations or maintenance support work such as complex maintenance; light and heavy equipment operation; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Essential Duties:

The essential duties for a General Engineering Tech I or II include:
  • Develops new test procedures, implements use of new equipment and provides technical expertise in maintenance and calibration of equipment.
  • Identifies, analyzes, and implements solutions for complex maintenance problems.
  • Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.
  • Moves equipment, tools, materials, and products.
  • Operates light and heavy equipment; performs preventive maintenance and repairs on equipment.
  • Reviews and assists in the development of traffic control plans, coordinates with law enforcement agencies, monitors lane closures.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Additional responsibilities for General Engineering Tech II include:
  • Assists Traffic Engineer in planning and coordinating Traffic Section operations.
  • Oversees complex maintenance and spot improvement.
  • Conducts tests of highway construction materials, makes calculations, and records results.
  • Develops new test procedures, implements use of new equipment and provides technical expertise in maintenance and calibration of equipment.
  • Identifies, analyzes, and implements solutions for complex maintenance problems.
  • Interprets plans, specifications, and estimate (PS&E) policy and clarifies procedures.
Minimum Qualifications for General Engineering Tech I or II:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience:

General Engineering Tech I: 4 YEARS in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent).

General Engineering Tech II: 6 YEARS in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent).

Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:
  • Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Commercial Driver's License
Competencies:

The required competencies for a General Engineering Tech I or II include:
  • Maintenance concepts, methods, policies and requirements
  • Basic traffic management and control procedures
  • Planning, coordinating and handling multiple projects within area of responsibility to meet short and long-term deadlines
  • Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems
  • Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade
  • Using applicable electronic test equipment
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
  • Training in a classroom, office, or field environment
Additional Competencies for a General Engineering Tech II include:
  • Applicable testing methods, processes and procedures
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Subject to outside environmental conditions; no effective weather protection
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist
  • Reaching-extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Fingering-picking, pinching, typing; working primarily with fingers rather than whole hand

  • This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
    • Please note that the Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation - 49 CFR Part 40, at 40.151(e) - does not authorize "medical marijuana" under a state law to be a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position.
  • Must be able to report for duty within 30 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
