JOB SUMMARY:
Ramapo College of New Jersey seeks a creative and enthusiastic content specialist to join our Communications and Public Relations (OCPR) team. This team member plays an active role in telling the story of Ramapo College.
The ideal candidate will have a passion for storytelling, writing and/or tailoring compelling and engaging content for various communications/PR and marketing channels. The candidate will have a keen ability to identify and write about newsworthy opportunities by partnering with campus community members and staying apprised of and anticipating current events, draft news releases, and prepare pitches for media outlets. In this role, the communications specialist will work independently on projects prioritized by the director of communications and public relations and will collaborate with colleagues across cores and units to bring those projects to fruition. This role will support the College's strategic, communications, and enrollment/marketing plans. It will utilize the College's branding strategies, language, and standards by developing engaging content tailored for target audiences that highlights our achievements, programs, trajectory, and community impact to raise the visibility and reputation of Ramapo College.
Examples of Duties
Key Responsibilities: Storytelling and Content Creation: Write, edit, and proofread a variety of content including college news stories, press releases, and marketing copy. Develop compelling narratives that highlight the college's programs, faculty research and mentorship, student success, accomplishments, and events. Partner with faculty, staff, and students to identify the compelling, human interest stories that showcase and differentiate the Ramapo College community to key stakeholders and audiences; write copy for the web, media pitches, etc.
Newsworthy Opportunities: Identify and pitch newsworthy stories related to college achievements, faculty research, student successes, and community involvement. Initiate and support collaboration with various departments to gather information and generate content ideas related to topics that can spur the interest of local, regional, and national media outlets, as well as targeted stakeholders and audiences; recommend and/or secure visual assets to strengthen content initiatives
Press Releases: Work with the OCPR director to craft pitches, write, and distribute press releases that effectively communicate important college news to media outlets and stakeholders. Monitor media coverage, track the impact of press releases, and recommend strategies to enhance impact. Secure information and assets from relevant units on campus necessary for drafting releases.
Content Strategy: Contribute to content strategies that align with the college's strategic goals and enhance its brand presence. Remain current with trending and breaking news stories in order to capitalize on opportunities to promote subject area experts to media outlets or leverage for college news stories opportunities to share with target audiences. Conduct social listening to keep a finger on the pulse of higher education news and stories to remain current with trends and to inform storytelling opportunities. Identify and incorporate multimedia opportunities in storytelling to increase engagement, drive traffic to key pages and platforms, amplify marketing and paid media investments, and keep content fresh and inviting. Support the development and integration of content calendars and ensure timely delivery of content.
Collaboration: Work closely with the communications team, marketing team, faculty, and staff to ensure accuracy and relevance in all written materials. Participate in brainstorming sessions and contribute innovative ideas for content development. Facilitate the storytelling capacity of others by modeling best practices, providing counsel, and making actionable recommendations. Organize and maintain files for shared use and access.
Qualifications
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communication, or a related field. Minimum of two years of professional experience in writing or content development. Proven ability to write clear, engaging, and compelling copy in a variety of styles appropriate for the College's target audiences. Thorough knowledge of the fundamentals of writing, grammar, syntax, style, and punctuation. Extreme attention to detail with strong copyediting, line editing, proofreading, and fact-checking skills. Excellent organizational and time-management skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines. Knowledge of and adherence to various publication styles, particularly AP Style, as well as copyright and duplication regulations. Ability to write in a deadline-driven environment. Ability to work independently as needed, exercise flexible thinking and nimble problem solving. and take on other duties as assigned. Demonstrated ability to prioritize, organize, and execute assignments and work flow.
