Backbone is looking for an experienced Hardware Compliance Engineer to join our team! As a Hardware Compliance Engineer at Backbone, you will be responsible for ensuring that our gaming hardware products comply with regulatory standards across global markets. You will play a critical role in managing compliance for New Product Introduction (NPI) programs, ensuring all products with wireless, Bluetooth, RF, and battery technologies meet international regulatory and certification requirements. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams including engineering, product management, and manufacturing to guide the product lifecycle from design to launch while maintaining compliance integrity across multiple regions.
What You'll Do:
- Global Compliance Management: Oversee and manage the compliance process for hardware products with RF, Bluetooth, wireless technologies, and batteries to ensure adherence to regulatory standards for international product launches.
- New Product Introduction (NPI) Support: Collaborate with product development and engineering teams during the NPI process to ensure compliance requirements are incorporated from the early design stages.
- Regulatory Certification: Lead efforts to obtain certifications such as FCC (US), CE (Europe) and other country-specific certifications. Manage the application, testing, and certification processes for RF, wireless, and battery technologies.
- Compliance Testing and Documentation: Coordinate and manage product testing with third-party labs, ensuring all required testing for wireless, Bluetooth, RF, and battery safety is completed. Prepare and maintain technical documentation and reports for certification submissions.
- Regulatory Standards Knowledge: Stay up to date on global regulations and certification requirements related to RF, Bluetooth, wireless, and battery-powered devices. Apply this knowledge to guide engineering and product teams.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with internal teams (product, engineering, legal, manufacturing, and supply chain) to ensure all aspects of product compliance are aligned with market-specific regulatory requirements.
- Risk Mitigation: Identify potential compliance risks and provide recommendations to address them early in the product design and development cycle.
- Post-Market Surveillance: Monitor any changes in global regulatory requirements and ensure ongoing product compliance in all markets post-launch.
Auditing and Reporting: Conduct internal audits to ensure compliance processes are followed and report on compliance status to leadership.
What We're Looking For:
- 3-5 years of experience in hardware compliance engineering, with a focus on consumer electronics, preferably in products with wireless, Bluetooth, RF, and battery components.
- Strong understanding of global compliance standards such as FCC, CE, RoHS, REACH, Bluetooth SIG, UL/IEC 62133 (battery safety), and other international regulatory requirements.
- Familiarity with the technical requirements for RF and wireless communication technologies (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, etc.), as well as battery safety standards.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and external testing labs.
- Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple compliance programs for simultaneous global product launches.
- Analytical mindset with the ability to assess risks and resolve complex compliance challenges.
Meticulous attention to detail in managing technical documentation, certifications, and regulatory submissions.
Bonus Points:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related technical field.
- Experience with NPI programs for global product launches
- Familiarity with certification processes in key global markets (e.g., North America, Europe, Asia, Middle East).
- Experience working in the gaming hardware industry or consumer electronics sector.
