Principal Hardware Instrument Engineer

Job Description Summary:

A Hardware Instrument Engineer (PMTS) applies scientific analysis and experimental methods to design, develop, and evolve sensor instrument technology to meet the changing demands of our customers. Hardware Instrument Engineers are expected to follow the full lifecycle of instruments from concept through manufacturing. Devices include, but are not limited to, Electro-mechanical, Electro-Optical, and MEMS sensor systems.

Job Description:

Duties/Responsibilities:

  1. Subject Matter Expert in precision instruments development, knowledgeable and experienced in multiple technical disciplines.
  2. Assess customer needs and evaluate candidate precision instrument solutions to complex problems.
  3. Lead precision instruments development teams, providing technical and management oversight.
  4. Identify precision instrument risks and develop and execute mitigation strategies.
  5. Analyze precision instruments requirements and develop appropriate technology architectures.
  6. Design experiments and experimental hardware to prove which design concepts are viable and optimal.
  7. Collaborate with other engineers to design and develop precision instrument prototypes and production hardware to meet the application needs.
  8. Collaborate with other groups to integrate precision instruments into larger systems, delivering on performance metrics.
  9. Develop initial processes for the fabrication of custom-designed instruments.
  10. Draft and present formal technical documents, reports, and testing results.
  11. Provide training related to devices to employees, sub-contractors, and/or customers.
  12. Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills/Abilities:

  1. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  2. Understanding of the design, development, and application of a wide variety of instruments.
  3. Understanding of the processes used in the fabrication of precision instrument hardware.
  4. Thorough understanding of applied math and physics.
  5. Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  6. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  7. Proficient with general modeling and simulation tools such as MATLAB, computer-aided design (CAD) software, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software, and/or other design & analysis tools relevant to your discipline.

Education:
Requires a bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Applied Physics, Electrical, or Computer Engineering; Master's or PhD degree preferred.

Experience:
Requires 10-15 years of experience in Hardware Instrument Engineering or related fields.

Additional Job Description:
This position requires the ability to obtain a US secret clearance which requires proof of US citizenship.
