Amazon
Storage Hardware Development Engineer, Nitro SSD Job at Amazon in Seattle
Amazon, Seattle, WA, United States, 98127
DESCRIPTION
AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we're the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain - and we're looking for talented people who want to help.
You'll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You'll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers. And you'll experience an inclusive culture that welcomes bold ideas and empowers you to own them to completion.
The ideal candidate for this role will be an innovative self-starter. You will be an SSD NAND expert with experience in component characterization, media management, system (hardware and software) integration to optimize reliability and performance for a variety of use cases. You will work with engineers across the company as well as external companies and lead NAND development efforts on custom solid-state devices. AWS Engineers are shaping the way people use computers and designing the future of cloud computing technology - come help us make history!
What you will do:
You will be a member of a team designing AWS-specific hardware, firmware and software for non-volatile memory devices, focusing on NAND integration. You will be a part of the cross-functional effort from conception, through prototyping, validation and into production. You will lead HW development at both component and system level. You will work closely with AWS software engineers to tailor devices for the AWS environment.
Key job responsibilities:
As a senior hardware Engineering lead, you will define NAND specifications and roadmap to support the growth of Nitro SSDs, ensuring continuous advancements in performance and reliability. You will lead the integration of NAND technology with Nitro SSDs across multiple platforms, driving innovation to enhance quality and reduce lead time through improved validation approaches. Your role will involve developing strategies to improve SSD performance, reliability, and cost efficiency while understanding customer needs and delivering solutions that elevate customer satisfaction. You will oversee the health, performance, and reliability of a global fleet comprising millions of SSDs, using data-driven insights to maintain optimal operation and address challenges proactively. Additionally, you will ensure high manufacturing yields and effective screening processes to maintain quality standards. This role requires close collaboration with cross-functional external partners to deliver advanced storage solutions at a global scale, empowering AWS services to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving cloud ecosystem.
A day in the life:
You will lead the end-to-end integration of advanced NAND technology into Nitro SSDs across diverse platforms. You will define NAND requirements, specifications, choose manufacturing approach, define and optimize integration validation process methodology and drive innovation to enhance cost efficiency, reliability and performance at both component and system level, working at the forefront of cloud storage technology. You will oversee a global fleet of millions of SSDs, directly supporting customers worldwide through Amazon Data service and be responsible for fleet monitoring, large scale data analysis and defining metrics and drive strategies to enhance AWS service performance and availability.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
- 5+ years of hands-on NAND characterization and development experience with SSD or other storage systems
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 7+ years of hands-on NAND characterization and development experience with SSD or other storage systems
- Deep expertise with state-of-the-art of 3D NAND flash memory with clear understanding of NAND device physics and failure mechanisms, as well as hands on experience with failure analysis and debug
- Deep understanding of NAND media management policies and validation approach, SSD concepts such as wear-leveling, garbage collection, error-correction
- Experience with SSD back end firmware, SSD controller and NAND integration
- Experience in large scale data center operation excellence
- Experience in data processing and analysis using Python/R or other scripting languages
- Meets/exceeds Amazon's leadership principles requirements for this role
