Position Overview:

The Human Resources (HR) Director will oversee all human resources functions for The Platte River Concrete Co. This leadership role is responsible for managing the Company’s HR strategy, policies, programs, and compliance in alignment with our business objectives. The HR Director will work closely with senior leadership to attract, develop, and retain a high-performing, safe, and compliant workforce. This position is key to fostering a positive workplace culture, improving employee engagement, and ensuring the Company’s policies and practices meet industry standards and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Strategic HR Leadership
    • Develop and implement HR strategies and initiatives that align with the Company's business goals and growth objectives.
    • Partner with the Executive Team to support the Company's strategic direction, ensuring alignment with organizational culture, values, and priorities.
    • Analyze HR metrics to identify trends, challenges, and opportunities for improvement across the workforce.
  2. Recruitment and Talent Acquisition
    • Oversee recruitment efforts for drivers, operational staff, and corporate positions, ensuring the Company attracts top talent.
    • Develop and manage a robust talent acquisition strategy that meets current and future staffing needs.
    • Collaborate with department heads to create job descriptions, set hiring priorities, and coordinate interview and hiring processes.
    • Collaborate with outside recruiting agencies.
    • Lead the development and implementation of employee referral programs and job fairs.
  3. Employee Relations and Retention
    • Serve as a trusted advisor to leadership and employees on HR matters, including conflict resolution, employee concerns, and performance management.
    • Create and maintain an inclusive, positive work environment by implementing effective employee engagement strategies.
    • Develop and promote initiatives aimed at improving employee retention, reducing turnover, and increasing job satisfaction.
    • Lead efforts to resolve workplace issues, mediate disputes, and enforce Company policies in a fair and consistent manner.
    • Organize and manage Company events and outings.
  4. Performance Management
    • Design and implement performance management programs that encourage employee development and alignment with Company goals.
    • Collaborate with Fleet Management, assist in managing truck availability and maintenance schedules.
    • Assist in developing employee score cards to track employee performance metrics.
    • Provide coaching and support to managers on employee performance reviews, goal setting, and corrective actions.
    • Develop programs for continuous employee development, leadership training, and career advancement.
  5. Payroll
    • Oversee, process and administer accurate and timely payroll for all employees, including calculating salaries, deductions, and benefits, while adhering to federal and state regulations.
    • Supervise the maintenance of employee payroll records.
    • Ability to learn and become proficient in using payroll software to efficiently calculate and distribute payroll, including the ability to troubleshoot system issues.
    • Lead and assist in the onboarding process through the Company payroll software to efficiently prepare new employees for training and payroll implementation.
    • Assist and coordinate with the production team on employee scheduling.
  6. Compensation and Benefits
    • Oversee the administration of compensation and benefits programs, ensuring they are competitive, equitable, and compliant with federal motor carrier and state regulations.
    • Conduct market research into benchmark pay structures and recommend changes to stay competitive in the ready mixed concrete, construction, and logistics industries.
    • Manage employee benefits programs, including health insurance, retirement plans, and other perks, ensuring that employees are well-informed and supported.
  7. Compliance and Legal Responsibilities
    • Ensure the Company complies with all federal, state, and local employment laws, including those specific to the trucking industry (e.g., DOT regulations, FMCSA guidelines, labor laws, etc.).
    • Stay informed on changes in employment law, trucking industry regulations, and safety standards to ensure Company practices remain compliant.
    • Lead investigations into any HR-related legal matters, including worker’s compensation claims, unemployment disputes, or other employee grievances.
    • Communicate directly with the Company outside legal counsel.
  8. Health and Safety
    • Partner with the Safety Director to maintain safety programs, ensuring the well-being of drivers, office staff, and other employees.
    • Ensure that all safety protocols are followed and documented, particularly for truck drivers, including DOT physicals, certifications, and ongoing training.
    • Facility random drug and alcohol screenings in accordance FMCSA regulations.
    • Work with insurance carriers and third-party vendors to manage safety-related claims and reduce the Company’s risk exposure.
  9. HR Technology and Data Management
    • Manage and optimize the use of HR systems to track employee data, performance, and payroll.
    • Analyze HR-related data to drive decisions on staffing, compensation, and retention strategies.
    • Ensure accurate record-keeping for compliance and reporting purposes, including employee documentation, certifications, and training records.
  10. Leadership and Team Development
    • Manage and mentor a team of HR professionals, setting clear goals and providing ongoing support and development opportunities.
    • Foster a high-performance HR team by setting expectations for service delivery, accountability, and process improvement.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience:

  • A Bachelor’s or Associate degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field is preferred.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in Human Resources, with at least 3 years in a leadership role, preferably in the transportation or logistics industry.
  • Strong knowledge of DOT regulations, FMCSA guidelines, and other industry-specific compliance requirements.
  • Proven experience with full-cycle recruitment, employee relations, performance management, and compliance in a fast-paced, operationally intensive environment.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong leadership and people management skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of employment laws and regulations, particularly those specific to the trucking industry.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with all levels of staff and management.
  • Ability to think strategically while managing day-to-day operational HR tasks.
  • Experience in handling sensitive and confidential matters with discretion.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to resolve complex employee issues.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, specifically in document management.
