The Harold Washington College Part-Time Tutor - Speech bridges the gap between the college and the needs of the student. This position also helps students make academic progress, while promoting independent learning and self-reliance.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Provides academic assistance to assigned tutees, either in a group or individually.
2. Establishes liaison with the instructor and works under the instructor’s direction to assist the student.
3. Maintains records on each student who is being tutored, including follow-up and periodic assessment.
4. Helps students develop positive attitudes toward learning and studying and helps students develop a high level of motivation in academic areas.
5. Assists students in achieving a better understanding of specific subject material and in improving academic capabilities in designated areas.
6. Helps students develop the study skills necessary for academic success.

EMBEDDED TUTORING:

• Pro-actively engage students (in groups and/or individually) with learning exercises, monitoring students’ level of comprehension, and assisting students in the classroom with materials and course content.
• Engage exclusively in student-centered tasks to support student learning and development.
• Understand the expectations of student work and assignments (rubrics, class assignments, and/or projects) and explain them to students in multiple ways.
• Prioritize student engagement and experience with the tutoring centers and services by promoting and sharing services available directly with students.
• Support the student and instruction to increase student engagement for academic growth and development.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Management, Accounting, or business-related discipline. Consideration will be given to candidates who do not have a Bachelor’s degree but possess technical certification(s) necessary for the subject being tutored.
2. Possess excellent communication skills, and the ability to work with a diverse student body.
3. Must be self-directed and able to complete assignments in a timely manner.
