Job Description - DEPUTY PRESS SECRETARY (24000AV1)

Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell seeks a Deputy Press Secretary to assist in its fast-paced, high-volume communications office. The Deputy Press Secretary will respond to media inquiries, draft press materials, pitches, talking points and remarks, assist with staffing the attorney general, and will report to the Director of Communications and Press Secretary.

Primary Duties

Responsibilities of the Deputy Press Secretary include, but are not limited to:

  1. Respond to media inquiries from local and national print, radio and television outlets;
  2. Draft press releases, talking points, public statements and remarks regarding Office matters, including areas such as legislative priorities, community engagement, health care, consumer protection, the environment, and others;
  3. Coordinate with bureau and division chiefs to track announcements, cases, and activities;
  4. Research and identify potential story angles and pitch story ideas to reporters;
  5. Assist in staffing the attorney general at public events across the Commonwealth;
  6. Collaborate with and assist other staff, including the Director of Communications, Press Secretary, other Deputy Press Secretaries, and the Digital Director, as needed, on a variety of media and public relations events, issues, and projects.

Position Type

Full-Time/Exempt. Our current hybrid model includes some remote workdays for most positions.

Qualifications

Position Requirements

Bachelor’s degree or related experience; experience in journalism, public relations, government; effective written and oral communication and research skills; attention to detail and organizational skills; proficiency with digital communications and social media platforms; and the ability to work with a team under deadlines and manage multiple projects. The Deputy Press Secretary is expected to work some nights and weekends, and ideally, should possess a valid driver’s license. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a connection to the people and communities we serve, and an interest in supporting a respectful and inclusive work environment.
