TITLE: Family Service Worker

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required associate degree, bachelor’s degree preferred, in social work or related field. Strong organizational, writing, and verbal skills. Ability to work effectively with a diverse population and manage a caseload of 60-70 families.

REPORTS TO:
Head Start Early Learning Director or Designee

JOB SUMMARY:
Responsible for providing case management services to families and children. Create and maintain positive relationships with families. Assist and support family involvement/engagement in areas of the program. Ensure compliance with all Head Start Performance Standards and HCESC Policies and Procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  1. Adheres to the Mission and Vision of HCESC.
  2. Demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge of social work. Maintains professional boundaries in relationships with staff and families by distinguishing between others’ needs and one’s own, guarding against abuse of power and sexual misconduct, and using appropriate language.
  3. Works as a team member with program personnel to ensure all service area requirements are met to carry out the goals and objectives of the program.
  4. The ability to relate to persons with diverse educational, socio-economic, and ethnic backgrounds. Employs a culturally competent and flexible approach when working with those from various cultures.
  5. Demonstrates respect for others by sharing information objectively and non-judgmentally and adjusting verbal and written communication strategies for different audiences.
  6. Advances program practice by promoting a positive working environment and working collaboratively with other staff to understand and support the adoption of best practices for children, families, and staff.
  7. Maintains full enrollment by facilitating outreach and recruiting families. Communicates the program’s eligibility, selection, and enrollment policies and assists families in completing enrollment packet and all required documentation.
  8. Initiates and maintains regular contact with families. Promotes a unified approach to sharing child information by engaging in joint planning with teachers, other specialists, and other family contacts in community programs.
  9. Engages families as full partners in their own development by helping them assess their needs and strengths, address challenges that affect their well-being, set realistic and achievable long/short-term goals, and support them in taking actions to reach set goals.
  10. Applies program policies in working with families and the community by being knowledgeable of the program requirements. Meets federal, state, and program documentation requirements by maintaining accurate, objective, complete, timely, and well-organized child and family records.
  11. Acts as advocate between community resources, school districts, and families.
  12. Helps facilitate parent orientation, parent committee meetings, and family activities.
  13. Provides case management and resource/referral services to families.
  14. Participates in staff meetings, classroom team meetings, and training opportunities as deemed necessary by the supervisor.
  15. Assists in identifying potential parents as Policy Council members.
  16. Performs other duties as assigned.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Shall be appointed to the number of days as determined by the work assignment. Salary to be established by the Board.

EVALUATION:
Family Service Worker performance will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board’s evaluation policy.
