Job Summary
Manufacturing Engineer develops and improves the production process for manufacturing goods. They determine the best way to use a piece of machinery and how the assembly line workers can maximize efficiency.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities
- Knowledge of fabrication equipment and its operations
- Experience with tooling design and fabrication
- CAD/ 3D modeling competency
- Previous knowledge and experience with G-code and CNC programming
- Mechanical aptitude with hands-on ability
- Ability to organize multiple projects and establish priorities
- Ability to read and comprehend mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic prints
- Ability to learn and correctly use software programs
- Develops innovative solutions to complex engineering and manufacturing production problems through identification and implementation of advanced manufacturing processes including conducting process analysis, applying knowledge of product design, fabrication, assembly, tooling, and materials, conferring with suppliers, and soliciting observations from the operators/production technicians
- Refines and enhances processes by applying continuous improvement and key Lean manufacturing/production principles and techniques to areas of production
- Assures product and process quality by designing testing methods, testing finished product and process capabilities, and establishing standards to confirm and validate manufacturing process requirements
- Determines root cause of failure using statistical methods (e.g., design of experiment, SPC) that may result in changes in design, tolerances, or processing methods
- Designs and prepares concept drawings of new equipment or modifications to existing equipment
- Manages the overall implementation of capital equipment projects. Develops tooling and fixtures for new products and processes and works with tooling vendors to supply such designs
- Identifies and implements solutions for issues relating to safety, quality, productivity, and cost reductions
- Prepares documentation for new manufacturing processes and engineering procedures
- Prepares reports summarizing analyzed process information and trends
- Recommends product changes/improvements to Product Engineers. Improves manufacturing efficiency by analyzing and planning workflow, space requirements, and equipment layout
- Selects the appropriate cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials to be used
- Examines and measures completed units and parts to identify any defects and to ensure units conform to predetermined specifications; adjusts machine controls to resolve production errors
- Assists with the improvement and refinement of tooled pieces and tooling processes
- Works with QC, engineering, and other departments to communicate challenges and requirements
- Participates in Tool design reviews, incorporating the plant needed functions and connectors
- Sign-offs on all tool and fixture designs
- Troubleshoots problems with all tooling
- Repairs, fixes and implements engineering changes
- Develops and implements corrective and preventative actions
- Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, how to read drawings, and exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to present, persuade, and collaborate at all levels of the organization
- Highly motivated self-starter capable of driving change and influencing engineering decisions, with or without authority
- Monitors tooling builds to timeline, manages engineering changes
- Coordinates sampling, metrology requests and changes to tooling when it arrives on site
- Liaison between design engineering and manufacturing on new products and product changes
- Reviews tool usage to ensure the cost-effective use of resources and sustained supply
- Acts as the single point of contact to resolve tool-related problems in the manufacturing environment
- Coordinates plant resources as required to resolve safety, quality, throughput, and excessive cost issues related to machining
- Supports the customers in the resolution of machining and tooling related issues
- Manages tooling budgets and reports budget performance
- Recommends changes to cutting parameters to optimize the machining process and, in some cases, implements these changes
- Develops and maintains a plan to reduce tooling costs through individual and systemic cost reductions
- Coordinates the updating and revising of mechanical drawings related to tooling
- Attends regularly scheduled operations and problem-solving meetings
- Reports and documents Non-Conformances, Corrective Actions, and Continuous Improvements
- Applies statistical methods, lean manufacturing principles, and performs product/process analysis for cost reduction, quality improvement and improved efficiency
Experience/Skills:
- Minimum of 8 to 10 years related manufacturing experience
- Proficient in:
- CAD/Machine tooling and design
- Knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, and machining practices
- Extensive experience in tooling design and manufacturing required
- Extensive experience in CNC machining required
- Manage multiple engineering projects from start-up to completion
- Quality orientation and high attention to detail
- Ability to perform problem analysis and problem resolution
- Shares specialized knowledge with others. Represents Company on specific projects, leads and participates on project teams
- Good team player who can work efficiently with minimal supervision
- Ability to read blueprints and schematics
- Proficiency with computers and standard drafting software
Additional Job Details
Bachelor's Degree in Engineering field
