The ideal candidate will share Fresno City College’s commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. The successful candidate will join a department dedicated to the use of curriculum responsive to the students it serves.

Responsibilities:

  • Providing comprehensive counseling services for students including academic, career, personal, and life transitions counseling on an appointment basis;
  • Providing group counseling sessions, orientations, and workshops;
  • Assisting students in clarifying their educational goals, selection of courses, and developing Student Educational Plans (SEPs);
  • Monitoring student progress through comprehensive electronic data systems;
  • Maintaining close working relationships with program and other instructional faculty, feeder high schools, and community resources agencies;
  • Working with a diverse population of students to emphasize strategies for educational planning and transfer preparation;
  • Utilizing and keeping abreast of advanced counseling methods and student development theories that include integrating technology to support student learning and identification of career objectives;
  • Providing counseling services specific to the needs of students on academic probation or disqualification;
  • Counseling with a broad range of community college counseling services, including career and educational planning, orientation, transfer, veteran services, student recruitment, and personal counseling;
  • Instruction in counseling classes for job preparation, career planning, study skills, transfer preparation, or group dynamics;
  • Participate in the implementation of student success strategies;
  • Involvement in committee work and strategic planning efforts;
  • Implementation of student learning outcomes;
  • Perform other established duties and responsibilities of counselors;
  • Assume such other duties as may be assigned by the Dean of Student Services;
  • Flexibility as duties may include extended day, evening, and weekend assignments;
  • Communicate effectively with students and staff and maintain effective working relationships;
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • All candidates must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practices;
  • Master’s in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling; or
  • A valid California Community College Credential; or
  • The equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency).

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience and skill incorporating elements of diversity, equity, and inclusion into all areas of responsibility;
  • Recent experience working with racially minoritized students and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
  • Willingness to examine and remediate one’s practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with students and staff;
  • Experience providing counseling and follow-up services to students on probation or academic dismissal status;
