TRAINING SPECIALIST FULL-TIME – WELDING

Dawson Technical Institute (DTI) is dedicated to providing students with intensive and comprehensive industry-validated training in the construction trade and utility industries. DTI is committed to preparing students to compete in these industries by offering relevant competency to unionized apprenticeships and other relevant trade and utility worker opportunities. DTI seeks a full-time Welding Training Specialist Instructor who strengthens concepts presented in the classroom, laboratory, or trade shop area.
RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:
- Classroom/lab preparation, lesson planning, classroom instruction (theory and contextualized learning and assessment).
- Welding lab contact hours with students, lab clean up, material preparation for student lab work.
- Brightspace Learning Management System administrative work.
- Plan, implement, and evaluate effectiveness of training and achievement of program goals.
- Identify problems and develop creative solutions both independently and in cooperation with others.
- Knowledge of safety requirements, equipment usage, and field related lineman techniques.
- Knowledge of computer equipment operations and various software programs including, word processing, database management and spreadsheet applications.
- Assure that all required instructional and building materials are available when needed and are in safe working order.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Active/Retired Relevant journeyman card (Ironworker, Pipefitter, Laborer, Boilermaker, Sheet Metal) OR proof of completion of Welding apprenticeship program OR Bachelor’s in relevant technical field (Industrial, Manufacturing, Engineering, etc.) OR at least two industry credentials from the American Welding Society (AWS), the National Institute of Metalworking Skills (NIMS), American Petroleum Institute (API) or the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and five to seven years of arc welding including, mig (GMAW), and tig (GTAW), and stick welding (SMAW), plasm arc cutting, oxy-acetylene welding experience.
- Knowledge of current safety standards related to the classroom/shop and building maintenance trade.
- Exhibit sensitivity to a multicultural student population.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to teach welding related mathematics.
- Working independently and exercising sound judgement; maintaining confidentiality in all matters related to students.
- Ability to work under pressure and exercise flexibility as needed.
This position is represented by Local 1600.
Chicago residency is required for all full-time employees within six (6) months of hire.
