Amazon Robotics is building a new, foundational automation system which will transform warehouse operations by enabling the integration of multiple, complex automation solutions. The team is seeking a talented and motivated System Development Engineer to design and develop controls for robotics systems and industrial automation equipment.

The Sr. System Development Engineer will be responsible for designing, developing, integrating, troubleshooting, and optimizing various automation solutions, while acting as an engineering leader for our internal product development teams, internal/external engineering partner teams, and on behalf of our global Amazon customers.

Key job responsibilities:

1. Design, simplify and continuously improve system safety controls architecture including machine control code, networking and electrical design
2. Develop controls code utilizing structured text and ladder-logic on various PLC platforms (i.e. Rockwell, Siemens, Beckhoff)
3. Identify and implement system optimizations
4. Debug internal and field issues; develop tools and best practices for system monitoring and troubleshooting
5. Mentor and develop junior engineers in design and development best practices
6. Contribute to value engineering of the system’s electrical and controls hardware components
7. 25% travel expected to support onsite system testing

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

1. 5+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
2. BS / MS Electrical Engineering (or similar field)
3. Experience with Allen-Bradley PLCs, Siemens PLCs, and/or Soft PLCs/IPCs
4. Demonstrated experience with Functional Safety standards
5. Knowledge of systems engineering fundamentals (networking, storage, operating systems)
6. Experience programming with at least one modern language such as C++, C#, Java, Python, Golang, PowerShell, Ruby
7. Desire to work in a fast-paced environment
8. Ability to resolve complex issues in creative, efficient, and effective ways
9. Excellent written and oral communication skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Experience with PowerShell (preferred), Python, Ruby, or Java
2. Experience working in an Agile environment using the Scrum methodology
3. Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/network development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
4. Experience developing controls code utilizing Codesys platform
5. Experience with TCIP and industrial networks
6. Experience with HMI design and development
