The Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting all patient specimens from clinic patients in accordance with established procedures. Responsible for distributing specimens to appropriate areas within St. Luke's laboratory and performing general clerical duties.

Education: High School graduate or equivalent.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Graduated from an accredited phlebotomy program.

Experience: Six (6) months of phlebotomy experience.

Licensure/Certification/Registration: Certification as a phlebotomist.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Skill in phlebotomy and knowledge of phlebotomy collection processes, Universal Precautions, and generally accepted safety practices. Ability to accurately collect and process lab specimens while maintaining sample report identity using patient name and identification number. Ability to maintain accurate records and strict confidentiality regarding patient information. Ability to effectively greet the public and communicate with all individuals. Ability to follow directions and perform outlined tasks. Ability to exercise judgment and take responsibility for patient health and safety during specimen collection. Ability to organize work and meet deadlines. Able to write legibly, see, hear, read, and speak English.

READING: Intermediate - Ability to read and interpret documents such as operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.

WRITING: Intermediate - Ability to write routine reports, correspondence, or procedures.

SPEAKING: Basic - Ability to speak simple sentences.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Basic - Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's, using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

REASONING ABILITY: Intermediate - Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form and to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

AGE SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES: Skilled at assessment and knowledgeable of growth and development, providing appropriate care respective to the ages of the patients served per clinical environment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND ENVIRONMENT

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Color Vision required. Prolonged, extensive standing, walking, and bending. Assists with lifting and moving patients, supplies, and equipment. Considerable reaching, stooping, kneeling, and crouching. Lifts objects up to thirty-five (35) pounds; works more than eight (8) hours but less than twelve (12) hour shifts.

LIFTING REQUIREMENTS: Up to 10 pounds - Continuously Over 2/3 (5.5 – 8 hours); Up to 25 pounds - Frequently 1/3 to 2/3 (2.5 – 5.5 hours); Up to 35 pounds - Occasionally Under 1/3 (1-2.5 hours).

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Typical Noise Level - Moderate noise (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic).

WORKING CONDITIONS: Regularly exposed to the risk of blood borne diseases. May be exposed to reagents used in laboratory testing and unpleasant patient elements. Exposed to hazards from electrical and mechanical equipment.
