Job Title: Controls Superintendent

Location: Columbia, MD (Baltimore Office) Employment Type: Full-Time

About the Role: Vertical Mechanical Group is seeking a skilled and experienced Controls Superintendent to oversee the installation, commissioning, and maintenance of building automation systems (BAS) and HVAC controls across our commercial projects. This leadership role is critical in ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and meet the highest standards of quality and performance.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead and manage the installation and commissioning of BAS and HVAC control systems for commercial projects.
  • Supervise and provide guidance to technicians, subcontractors, and other team members to ensure seamless project execution.
  • Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and contractors to align on project goals and deliverables.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to BAS and control systems.
  • Understand equipment control functions via PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) to operate within BAS (Building Automated System) or Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA).
  • Perform calibration, configuration, service, and maintenance of controls and controls subsystems.
  • Demonstrate and perform routine system updates, system troubleshooting, and utilize diagnostic tools to solve problems in a timely manner.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety protocols, project specifications, and industry standards.
  • Inspect, test, and verify control systems to ensure optimal performance and adherence to design specifications.
  • Maintain detailed documentation of installations, configurations, and maintenance activities.
  • Ability to read and understand schematical diagrams.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for clients regarding controls systems, providing regular updates and addressing concerns.
  • Work effectively in a fast-paced environment with team or management assistance.

Qualifications:
  • Proven experience in building automation systems (BAS) and HVAC controls.
  • Previous or current knowledge of Schneider, JCI, Siemens, Pritchett, or NAVSys control systems or platforms.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills.
  • Proficiency with major control platforms such as Trane, Siemens, Johnson Controls, or Honeywell.
  • Exceptional troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication skills for both technical and client-facing interactions.
  • Familiarity with industry standards, codes, and regulations.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.
  • [Preferred] Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
  • [Preferred] Certifications in BAS or HVAC controls.
  • [Preferred] BACnet or MODBUS Certification, Niagara Certification, or knowledge of CoolAutomation.
