Structural Engineering Lead Chicagoland Area – Fully Onsite $160–200K (Depending on Experience) – Full Time with Benefits Take your career to the next level with us R.M. Chin & Associates, Inc. (R.M. Chin) is seeking a Structural Engineering Lead to join our Transportation group with experience in the Chicagoland area. The ideal candidate should have experience preparing Phase II bridge plans and reports for IDOT and Tollway clients. This role presents an opportunity to participate in business development and project management. The ideal candidate should have experience leading and managing a team of structural engineers. Job Duties: Manage the preparation of Phase II engineering plans and specifications for design of highway and roadway bridge structures and retaining walls. Manage the preparation of Phase I TS&L studies and reports. Direct the preparation of structural design calculations and modeling to support design recommendations. Assist in the preparation of proposals, scope of services, and contract cost estimates. Submit documents to federal, state, and local agencies for code compliance review and obtain required permits. Development and drafting of plans and details using CAD software for project design documents. Performs structural engineering services during the construction phase such as responding to construction questions, review of contractor submittals and construction site observations. Prepares design drawings and/or specifications. Technically involved in the design of building structures that may include performing detailed checking of engineering work done by others, or general coordination of specific design aspects into a project. Function as the Lead Structural Engineer or Project Manager on transportation projects that include highway/railroad bridges, various types of retaining walls, culvert structures and transit related facilities. Proficiency in bridge engineering analysis software, including STAAD Pro, LARSA 4D and/or CSI Bridge. AASHTOWare Bridge Rating and Bentley CAD tools are preferred. Provide structural specifications, estimating, quantity calculations, technical reports, and detailed engineering analyses. Completes a variety of assignments such as drawings, specifications, and other materials suitable for procurement and construction purposes. May be required to provide the seal and signature of the professional engineer, as appropriate, ensuring compliance with all applicable codes, regulations, and ordinances. Field inspection and condition assessment of bridges, sign structures, culverts, and retaining walls. Preparation of quantity and cost estimates. Preparation of structural analysis and design calculations. Review of drawings to assure compliance with design intent and specifications. Assisting more experienced engineers with broader engineering activities. Preparation of technical studies, reports, and design document packages. Participate in incorporating advanced modeling techniques, concept development, design requirements, and operating strategies to account for the safety and functionality of end-users. Verify the characteristics of a site, providing technical assistance on securing structural soundness from loads and pressures caused by environmental or human influence. Proficient in engineering analysis, design, and practices, including rehabilitation and new design. Oversee the structural design group efforts. Communicates with project manager and other team members to coordinate activities and provide information about projects. Must have excellent organizational skills and be able to work well in a team environment Provide oversight to shape structural design group by hiring junior staff and scheduling training for Design and Construction department staff. Demonstrated proficient knowledge of structural design/analyses programs. Qualifications: Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from an accredited four-year college or university (Master’s degree a plus). Requires an Illinois Professional Engineer (PE) license and Illinois Structural Engineer (SE) license, or the ability to attain within one year. 7-15 years of relevant experience. Experience with relevant industry standard structural design software (STAAD, SAP2000, RAM, LPILE etc.) Proficiency with MicroStation required. Requires experience with Illinois DOT and Illinois Tollway structures design policies and procedures (County experience a plus). Must be self-motivated and able to work both independently and as part of project team to complete tasks. Benefits: Competitive base salary between $160 – 200K, depending on project assignment, experience, skills, and location.
