Position: School Bus Driver

Rate: Up to $30 per hour

SUMMARY

Under general supervision, operates a school bus over designated routes within an established time schedule to transport students to and from school and on special trips and events; performs daily inspections of the assigned bus; assists in the routine maintenance and cleaning of the bus; performs other related work as required.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

Transport students, faculty and parents on field trips or to athletic events, meeting scheduled departure and arrival times as assigned. Advise passengers to be seated and orderly while on vehicles. Maintain order among pupils during trips, in order to ensure safety. Comply with traffic regulations in order to operate vehicles in a safe and courteous manner. Follow safety rules as students are boarding and exiting buses, and as they cross streets near bus stops. Stop vehicles at safe and appropriate loading areas so that passengers can board. Prepare and submit reports that may include the number of passengers or trips, hours worked, mileage, and/or fuel consumption. Report delays or accidents. Report any bus malfunctions or needed repairs. Check the condition of a vehicle's tires, brakes, windshield wipers, lights, oil, fuel, water, and safety equipment to ensure that everything is in working order. Inspect vehicles, and check gas, oil, and water levels prior to departure. Keep bus interiors clean for passengers. Maintain current knowledge of evacuation procedures. Communicate with students, parents, teachers, administrators, etc., for the purpose of conveying and/or receiving information. Maintain the bus in a clean, sanitary, and orderly condition. Maintain the bus seat upholstery and make repairs as needed. Complete accurate departmental reports as required by law or as directed by the supervisor in a timely and thorough manner. Drive District vehicles to transport supplies and equipment as directed. Instructs students as to evacuation procedures. Adheres to policies and procedures in maintaining appropriate student behavior on the bus. Utilize a two-way radio system to maintain communication with the home base. Perform other related duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

Safe and defensive driving practices. Provisions of the California State Motor Vehicle Code and Education Code applicable to the operation of vehicles transporting students. Applicable traffic and transportation laws, codes, and regulations. Basic record-keeping and report preparation techniques. Health and safety regulations related to bus operation and transportation of students. Safety and maintenance requirements for a school bus. Bus inspection procedures. Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy. Correct English usage, grammar and vocabulary. Effective communication both orally and in writing. Ability to:

Maintain safe discipline level among passengers. Learn and apply district policies and procedures related to student discipline. Observe legal and defensive driving practices. Learn and follow designated routes and time schedules. Maintain bus or van in clean and proper working condition. Conduct safety inspections and perform routine preventive maintenance. Recognize equipment malfunctions and take appropriate actions. Maintain routine records. Understand and follow oral and written directions. Communicate effectively with others. React appropriately in an emergency situation to maintain order on the bus. Demonstrate empathy, friendliness, patience and responsibility. Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with fellow employees and members of the public. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education

High School Diploma or Equivalent. Experience:

Three years of experience operating a motor vehicle, at least one year of which was in the operation of a bus is required. Licenses/Certificates

California Certified School Bus Driver is required. Random Drug Testing

Employees in this classification are subject to random drug testing as prescribed by Federal law. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Submission of a Department of Motor Vehicle document listing current driving record up to 10 years or lifetime record if less than 10 years. Insurability by the District's liability insurance carrier. WORKING CONDITIONS WHICH MAY OCCUR

Work inside protected from weather 5 - 7 hrs./day. Work outside exposed to the weather less than 1 hr./day. Occasionally work in temperatures between 35 - 44 degrees F. Occasionally work in temperatures between 100 - 104 degrees F. Work in humidity over 60%. Noise exposure between 65 - 74 decibels. Exposed to direct sunlight less than 1 hr./day. PHYSICAL ABILITIES

Muscular Tension - may exert up to 50 pounds of force to lift, push, pull, carry, or otherwise move objects. Multi-Limb Coordination. Far Visual Acuity. Color Vision Acuity. Peripheral Vision. Speech Intelligibility in Noise. Sound Localization. This type of work will involve sitting when operating a bus and will also involve walking, or standing for extended periods of time. Hearing and speaking to exchange information. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a motorized vehicle. MENTAL ABILITIES
