DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION
The Membership Department at SFMOMA is dedicated to cultivating meaningful connections with its diverse community of members. It oversees a comprehensive membership program, including acquisition, renewals, and upgrades, while developing innovative strategies to drive sustained revenue growth. The department manages personalized communications, benefit fulfillment, and exceptional member service, all while leveraging the museum's CRM system (Tessitura) and marketing expertise to enhance member engagement and loyalty. With a focus on operational efficiency and creativity, the team plays a vital role in supporting SFMOMA's mission to make modern and contemporary art accessible to all.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Membership Marketing Intern will support the membership team at SFMOMA in executing key projects related to membership campaigns. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in marketing project management, digital asset management, and peer research for membership initiatives, specifically focused on the Fall 2025 member acquisition campaign and the design identity project for the 2025 Holiday gift membership promotions. The intern will collaborate with the Membership Department's direct marketing agency and various internal stakeholders to ensure the effective development and implementation of compelling marketing strategies.
PROJECT PLAN
Support with Membership Marketing Projects Management
• Assist in coordinating and managing the Fall 2025 member acquisition campaign with SFMOMA's marketing agency, ensuring smooth communication between internal stakeholders and external partners.
• Route assets, feedback, and directions between SFMOMA and the agency, facilitating an efficient feedback cycle and ensuring the campaign aligns with SFMOMA's brand and objectives.
• Assist in launching a new design identity project for gift membership promotions for the holiday 2025 season.
Peer Research
• Conduct online research to enhance the Philanthropy department's benchmark of membership and annual giving offers from other institutions.
• Identify new and innovative ideas that could be implemented into SFMOMA's membership offerings to stay competitive and creative.
Classify and Digitize Physical Samples
• Assist in organizing and digitizing physical samples of membership promotions, including past materials from SFMOMA and other institutions, to ensure they are easily accessible for future reference.
Image Sourcing and Classification
• Help source and classify images within SFMOMA's Digital Garden (image library) that have potential for use in membership marketing promotions.
Reporting Support
• Assist in compiling reports related to ticket-to-membership conversions, gift membership sales, and other marketing tactics.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
The Membership Intern will learn about museum memberships, how they are promoted, and be part of the creation of two major marketing campaigns promoting SFMOMA memberships.
ADDITIONAL INTERNSHIP PROGRAMMING
The Summer 2025 Internship will offer 9 weeks of hands-on experience and mentorship along with weekly presentations and discussions with various departments in the museum, off-site educational visits within the Bay Area community, and access to various tours and events within the museum.
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS
• Applicants must be currently enrolled in school or a recent graduate. The SFMOMA recognizes a graduation date within 6 months of the internship start date as a recent graduate.
• Strong interest in marketing, nonprofit organizations, or the arts.
• Excellent organizational and communication skills, with a keen attention to detail.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other office software (Adobe PDF, Word, PowerPoint)
• An interest for SFMOMA's mission and a desire to contribute to the Museum's fundraising efforts.
**Current SFMOMA employees are not eligible to apply for the Summer 2025 internship.**
$7,200 - $7,200 one-time
$7,200 pre-tax stipend paid out in a one-lump sum after start date
