The company aims to develop hypersonic aircraft quickly and cost-effectively by integrating hardware-rich, iterative development with modern computing and autonomy. This approach has been validated through design, build, and test of the company’s first combined turbojet-ramjet engine and is now being scaled through its first flight vehicle program, Quarterhorse. Hermeus is also developing Darkhorse — an uncrewed hypersonic aircraft designed to deliver unique asymmetric capabilities to the warfighter. As the Manager of Flight Software Engineering at Hermeus, you will be responsible for overseeing the software engineering function for our high-speed aircraft. Your primary focus will be on leading the design, development, and integration of software systems that enable safe and efficient operation of our high-speed aircraft. You will manage a talented team of software engineers and collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including avionics, vehicle engineering, and systems integration, to ensure seamless software integration throughout the aircraft. Responsibilities:Manage and support a team of flight software engineers, providing technical guidance and mentoring to drive individual and team growth. Ensure timely and efficient development, integration, and testing of flight software, supporting the overall flight control system goals. Contribute to the design, development, and integration of software for hypersonic vehicles, ensuring software meets safety and mission requirements. Work closely with cross-functional teams, including hardware, systems engineering, and flight test, to align software efforts with overall program objectives. Develop and maintain project plans, track progress, and report on team deliverables, ensuring alignment with deadlines and project requirements. Participate in software verification and validation efforts, assisting with testing protocols, simulations, and integration activities. Implement and improve software development processes, driving adherence to industry best practices and quality standards. Assist in managing team performance, providing feedback, conducting performance reviews, and identifying opportunities for skill development. Collaborate with senior technical leaders to ensure the software team’s work aligns with Hermeus’ technical and operational goals. Advocate for continuous improvement in the team’s workflows, tools, and practices to improve overall efficiency and software quality. Basic Qualifications:Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Engineering, or a related field. 8+ years of experience in embedded flight software development, with at least 2year in a leadership or principaltechnical role. Professional experience with real-time embedded systems, flight control software, or mission-critical software development. Professional experience in recruiting, developing, and scaling engineering teams, including coaching and mentoring engineers at all levels. Preferred Qualifications: Experience working in a startup environment is a plus Master's or PhD degree in a relevant technical field (e.g., Aerospace Engineering, Software Engineering, Robotics). Experience working with aerospace safety standards and regulations (e.g., DO-178C, MIL-STD-498, etc.) Experience with avionics systems, flight simulation environments, and autonomous vehicle software development. Prior experience working in the hypersonic or commercial space sectors. Active participation in industry standards committees or working groups related to aerospace software.  $150,000 - $238,000 a yearThe salary information provided is a general guideline only.
