Description

The Johnston County Building and Grounds Department has an immediate opening for a Full-Time Custodian.

Employees in this class perform general housekeeping and floor maintenance work in the County's buildings. Employees may work in the courthouse or other assigned building during normal daily work hours, or in the evening in various buildings on rotation. Employees work assigned floors, usually on their own, with the Lead Custodian available occasionally for questions or through checks of the Supervisor moving through the various buildings. Work of employees on the day shift involves contact with the public using the courthouse and requires tact and courtesy in responding to requests. Employees are subject to hazards in property maintenance work including working in both inside and outside environments and exposure to cleaning solutions. Duties may also expose the employees to human body fluids and thus the work is subject to the OSHA requirements on bloodborne pathogens. Work is performed in accordance with established policies and procedures, supplemented by instructions under regular supervision of the Housekeeping Supervisor.
Duties and Responsibilities

  • Cleans walls, windows, and blinds.
  • Cleans bathrooms; scrubs lavatory and toilet fixtures and mirrors and replaces or restocks tissue and paper towel supplies and soap dispensers throughout the day as needed or at night; checks bathrooms regularly throughout the day and cleans or restocks as needed or upon request.
  • Vacuums public areas and offices following weekly schedule.
  • May sweep sidewalks, pick up trash outside, and empty trash cans.
  • Sweeps and mops hallways; and dusts furniture such as tables, desks, bookcases, filing cabinets, etc. in assigned areas.; uses furniture polish occasionally to clean furniture.
  • Cleans glass doors and mirrors daily depending on traffic and need.
  • Empties trash containers and replaces liners as need dictates, cleans floors, and straightens public areas; hauls trash outside to the dumpster or collection area.
  • Removes trash from parking lots around maintained facility.
  • Uses tools and equipment such as vacuum cleaners, brooms, buffers, shampooers, extractors, mops, and wringers.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • General knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.
  • General knowledge of routine maintenance requirements of buildings, and equipment used.
  • General knowledge of floor care, stripping, top scrubbing, waxing, buffing and shampooing floors.
  • Ability to identify cleaning needs and resolve with appropriate methods and supplies.
  • Ability to perform manual labor requiring continuous physical effort.
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with peers and supervisors, and the public when required.
Desired Education and Experience
  • Ability to read and write and some experience in the skilled maintenance and manual labor work; or
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Prior experience of related custodial experience in a business setting highly preferred.
