Description
Maintains the City animal shelter and facility and cares for the impounded animals.
Examples of Duties
- Cleans the shelter, to include kennels, cages and runs throughout the day.
- Wash/Dry laundry.
- Washing dishes.
- Cleans the play yard after the animals.
- Performs work in the general lawn care of the facility grounds.
- Cleans the office, walkways, and bathroom area of the shelter.
- Feeds, waters, grooms and helps unload animals.
- Responds to inquiries regarding animals and answers to basic questions on animal control activities on the phone and/or in the office.
- Performs general preventive maintenance on the equipment.
- Performs meet and greets with potential adopters.
- Assist in taking adoption photos of the animals for social medial platforms and adoption events.
- Assesses the behavior of the animals for adoption placement.
- Provide medication for sick animals as needed.
- Monitor animals while in play yard.
- Monitor and restock supplies.
- Assist police officers with the impoundment of animals.
- Fill out daily observation sheets on each animal and notify animal control officers of abnormal behavior.
Typical Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience:
- Ability to read and write and minimal experience (less than 6 months) animal-related experience required.
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
Licenses and/or Certifications:
- Animal CPR and First Aid preferred.
- Animal behavior, enrichment and/or training classes preferred.
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of animal behavior, Virginia Animal Laws, care of animals and shelter-related equipment
- Communication skills
- Being able to work in a team environment
- Able to multi-task
- Work in a high stress situations
- Basic computer knowledge/skills
- Ability to deal with the general public and to deal with dangerous animals.
- Ability to deal with emotional citizens.
- Ability to work holidays and weekends.

Work Environment:
- Worker is exposed to outdoor weather conditions or extreme noise, odors, heights and/or dust and to wild and/or dangerous animals.
- Stooping, crouching, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, hearing, seeing up close, kneeling, reaching, pushing, talking, standing, finger movement, repetitive motions.
