The incumbent works under the direction of the Staff Services Manager I in the Communications Unit of the Advertising and Communications Section within the Nutrition and Physical Activity Branch (NPAB). This position supports the NPAB by creating visual and graphic design for nutrition and physical activity educational materials and publications in multiple mediums for use throughout the state by CalFresh Healthy Living (CFHL)/ Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) grantees and partners.

Working Conditions

Telework Information

This position may be eligible for telework up to three (3) days per week and is required to report in-person to the designated headquarters office location a minimum of two (2) days per week. The amount of telework permitted is at the discretion of the Department and is subject to change, consistent with CDPH's Telework Program. All employees who telework are required to be California residents in accordance with Government Code 14200. Candidates who reside outside of the state of California may be interviewed; however, the selected candidate must have a primary residency in the state of California prior to appointment (and continue to maintain California residency) as a condition of employment. Failure to meet this requirement may result in the job offer being rescinded.

Business travel may be required , and reimbursement considers an employee's designated headquarters office subject to regulations and bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the designated headquarters office will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

Proficiency in graphic design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign). Experience creating a variety of visual materials, including brochures, posters, infographics, and educational content. Knowledge of ADA compliance and accessibility standards for digital and print materials. Strong understanding of design principles, including layout, typography, color theory, and branding. Ability to develop and adapt materials for diverse audiences, including low-literacy and underserved groups. Experience with web design and content development for both internal and external platforms. Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, for collaborating with internal teams and external stakeholders. Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Attention to detail and strong organizational skills for managing digital and physical assets. Familiarity with the development, translation, and dissemination of health education materials. Experience with customer service and working with vendors, contractors, or external partners. Familiarity with design best practices for social media, newsletters, and other digital communications.
