A Regular Substitute is a teacher/Teaching Assistant who is appointed to a regular teaching/teaching assistant position in place of a regular teacher/teaching assistant who is away from his/her position on a leave of absence. (minimum of one semester; maximum of full school year)

Qualifications/Performance Responsibilities:
Must possess a current NYS certification in School Social Work
Provides support, counseling and case management services to individual students to address personal, social, or emotional issues related to their educational progress and development.
Consults with students, parents, teachers, administrators and members of both the school and the student services team to define and implement developmentally appropriate learning strategies, behavioral interventions, as well as socio-emotional supports for students.
Works closely with staff members, parents and other specialists to assist in the assessment, planning and program development for at-risk students and/or those referred to the Child Support Team.
Initiates and plans in-service programs for staff, parents and community members.
Assists in the development of prevention programs and provides counseling and crisis intervention for individuals and small groups as the need arises.
Communicates clearly and succinctly in both oral and written form, supervises the appropriate use and confidentiality of student records, and maintains reports of contacts with students, parents, private practitioners, agencies, etc., as related to specific students.
Serves on established committees and attends meetings as required including beyond the normal professional workday.
Demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of New York State learning standards, FERPA, DASA and state regulations governing the ethical provision of counseling services.
Evidences a clear commitment to professional growth and skill development.
Works with families to facilitate understanding, promote constructive participation in resolving difficulties their child(ren) may be experiencing, and increase awareness of the availability of appropriate resources, making referrals to community agencies, services and programs for additional services when appropriate.
Serves as liaison between home and school, making home visits when additional follow-up is necessary.
Responds to students in crisis using well-established therapeutic crisis intervention techniques, de-escalation strategies and/or time-out procedures in accordance with NYS regulation and best practices.
Implements threat assessment and suicide assessment protocols.
Serves as a member of the Building Crisis Response team to respond to student and/or staff loss.
Possesses experience working with students with disabilities and knowledge of applicable Federal and NYS regulations.
Demonstrates experience responding to a range of mental health issues with best practice interventions.
Additional responsibilities as assigned by the Building Principal, Coordinator of Student Services and/or Assistant Superintendent for Exceptional Education and Student Services.
Essential Core Characteristics:
Experience working in school settings and with high school-aged students.
Experience with child and family counseling.
Experience coordinating with community agencies/resources; contacts available.
Experience working as a member of a team and collaborating with others.
Enjoys working with teenagers.
Familiar with Committee on Special Education process and IEP guidelines - strong background knowledge regarding students with disabilities.
Background in substance abuse counseling.
Strong mental health background.
Able to handle crises, especially when lethality concerns and child protection issues are evident.
Efficient/effective communication skills.
Exhibits a strong ability to manage multiple demands with balance and a sense of humor.
Is compassionate, inclusive and respectful.
Maintains a high level of confidentiality.
Possesses strong knowledge of family systems and can demonstrate solid working experience with parents and families.
Gets along well with others and respects all school disciplines.
Has a desire to get involved in the life of the school
